The Carson Senators girls basketball team broke through for its first two victories of the season during the Las Vegas Holiday Classic Dec. 27-29 at Centennial High School.
After opening up with losses to Durango (79-33) and Silverado (67-48), Carson beat Paramount (Calif.), 47-48, to register its first victory under first-year coach Todd Ackerman.
Gina Bianchi scored 17 points and Yvonne Hollett added 11 in the win.
The Senators dropped the following game to Santa Fe (Calif.), 74-41, but behind 19 points from Bianchi, they finished the tournament with a 45-27 victory over Chaparral on Saturday.
Hollett led Carson with 10 points against Santa Fe and Bianchi had a team-high 12 against Durango and Silverado.
Senior Christy Works was named to the All-Tournament team for the Senators, who are 2-12 on the season.
"Getting the first win was big," Ackerman said. "It was one of those things we needed to have happen. We still have a ways to go, but we're getting better. I told the girls that every game is going to be a battle like the Paramount game. If we can hang around, we'll be able to come through."
Ackerman said Silverado was 8-0 when it faced the Senators and that Durango - which lost to Galena in the semifinals of the tournament - was one of the better teams in Las Vegas.
The Senators will travel to Spanish Springs tonight, where they will face the Cougars beginning at 7 p.m.
