Filings begin today for Nevada judge seats

A change by the 2007 Legislature has moved the filing period for Nevada district and supreme court judges up from May to a 10-day period in January " today through Jan. 18.

The change was made at the judges' request because of judicial canons that bar fundraising for judges who run unopposed. Now, all judges seeking office will know Jan. 15 if they have an opponent.

So far today, four have filed with the Nevada Secretary of State's Office. They are:

Karen Jenkins, for the First Judicial District, Department II seat being vacated by Judge Bill Maddox.

Todd Russell, for the First Judicial District, Department I, seat he was appointed to in November 2006 by Gov. Kenny Guinn. He is completing the balance of retired judge Michael Griffin's term.

Justice Mark Gibbons, for Nevada Supreme Court seat D. Gibbons is filing as an incumbent.

John Iroz, for Sixth Judicial District Department II. This district covers Humboldt, Lander and Pershing counties. Who is also an incumbent.

The 2008 primary election will be Aug. 12 followed by the general Nov. 4.
