Get ready, set, go - we're off to a good start this year, and we hope to cover a lot of old history news and new learning.
The first thing is to get the Dayton Museum in tip-top running order.
We have a lot of new docents and hopes for more. We are going to be doing a lot to get the old Carson & Colorado Depot up and running until we can get enough money to restore it as the original depot of old.
Meanwhile, back at the museum, we will be starting our teaching lectures for the docents.
We are bound and determined to turn our docents into pundits.
We are looking for some teens to be junior docents.
An hour or two on Saturday mornings can be a great learning experience for some of the young people in Dayton.
It wouldn't look bad on college applications either.
You could even experience being a character out of our historic past.
The more we know about our history, the more likely we will be able to preserve the visible history we have.
We would also like to arrange some tours around the area so many others may better understand the overall picture of the settlement of Dayton.
One of the other things we hope to do this year is to have some revolving displays of various things. We would like to enlist you, the public, in developing new exhibits that we would display for three months.
We can use anything that you would think people might like to see - doll collections, old bottles, vintage clothing and old tools to name a few.
You may contact any one of the phone numbers listed at the end of this article. We would take good care of your display and others would be able to enjoy it.
We want to do everything possible to create a lot of interest in the history of Dayton and Nevada. Dayton is so rich in the forming of Nevada history.
It's where it all started, and we want to preserve it for all the future generations.
Come be a part of our efforts to keep Dayton history alive and well.
The Dayton Museum is on Shady Lane and Logan Street in Old Town Dayton. The Web site is daytonnvhistory.org. Group tours are available. Call 246-5543, 246-0462 or 246-0441
