YERINGTON - Dayton rode the perfect fourth quarter foul shooting of Chanelle Thompson and Brittany Hill Wednesday night to a 56-52 win over host Yerington in the Dust Devils' league opener.

Thompson, the new kid in town at Dayton, scored 18 points for the Dust Devils, including 6 of 6 from the line in the fourth and last year's leading scorer Hill led all scorers with 21, including another 6 of 6 from the line in the fourth.

Yerington got 17 points each from Kayla Lommori and Karie-Ann Quartz, but the Lions couldn't overcome a 15-point third-quarter deficit.

Dayton forced 10 first quarter turnovers to take a 17-8 lead and Yerington struggled most of the game against the Dust Devils diamond-and-one press.

The pressure peaked at the end of the third quarter when Thompson and Hill alternately scored four baskets off steals to push the Dayton lead to 45-30 before Quartz got a steal and a layup at the third quarter buzzer to cut the lead to 45-32 heading into the fourth.

Yerington, now 1-1 in the Northern 3A, began the fourth with a 12-2 run to cut the Dayton lead to 47-44. But a pair of free throws by Thompson and a three pointer by Ariella Ruybal bumped it back to 52-44 midway through the quarter.

A Quartz basket with 14 seconds left cut it to 54-52 but considerable time ran off the clock before Dayton inbounded because Yerington was out of timeouts.

On the inbounds Hill was fouled with 1.6 second left and connected on her final attempts of the game.

Lommori's points came in just two quarters after she picked up her fourth personal foul in the final minute of the first quarter and didn't return until the fourth.

Quartz, meanwhile, began her day in a single car rollover accident on the way from her home in Schurz to Yerington.
