A Fallon man died early Friday morning from injuries he sustained when he walked into the path of a vehicle one mile east of Highway 95 alternate on Highway 50 in Silver Springs.
Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. John Schilling said the unnamed 23-year-old male and another man were walking westbound, away from their broken-down vehicle, when the victim stumbled into traffic.
According to Trooper Scott Simon, Jason Hyde of Douglas County was westbound in a government-owned Dodge sedan when the accident happened at 6:54 p.m. Thursday.
Schilling said the man was conscious and talking to troopers at the scene, to paramedics en route to the hospital and to hospital staff. Schilling said initial assessment at the scene indicated the man suffered only a broken leg.
He was taken by ambulance to Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center where a CAT scan revealed he'd suffered internal injuries. He was then transferred to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, where he died at about 1:30 a.m. Friday.
Simon said troopers are investigating the possibility that the pedestrian might have been under the influence of alcohol. The deceased man's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The accident closed Highway 50 for more than two hours.
Witnesses are asked to contact NHP at 688-2500 or 687-0400.
