The Retired and Senior Volunteers Program is looking for a few good men and women.
Director Janice Ayres said RSVP has a list of jobs volunteers can fill at Western Nevada College. WNC needs help handling jobs that can't be filled because of the budget cuts ordered throughout state government. When Ayres offered to try to find volunteers through RSVP for some of those needs, President Carol Lucey took her up on it.
Ayres said RSVP now has received job descriptions for volunteers to assist with tasks throughout the campus from the print shop to the baseball concession stand and the Jack Davis Observatory.
She said RSVP can pay expenses for mileage and meals up to $20 a month and carries insurance on each volunteer.
After making 4.5 percent budget cuts, she said the college desperately needs help and will provide any necessary training.
Susan Haas of RSVP emphasized that volunteers don't have to be senior citizens, they can be any age.
"We're focusing on baby boomers," she said. "We're looking for folks who maybe aren't ready to make a commitment to a full-time or part time job but they want to do something exciting that's needed and useful," she said. There's a lot more to this volunteer stuff than just helping seniors walk across the street. You can work in a government agency and use the skills you've developed over the years."
"What we're trying to do is assist WNC and offer some varied options for volunteers," she said.
A list of some positions needed follows. For more information call Susan Haas at RSVP, 687-4680 x 7 or Carolyn Davis x 6.
