PACIFICA, Calif. " When a whale carcass washed up on the shores of a Pacifica beach, it was interesting to passers-by, then it began to smell, then it was just plain unsightly.

But just whose responsibility it was to deal with the mess was a mystery " until now.

Even though the carcass is rotting in Pacifica, the beach where it washed up is part of the Sharp Park Golf Course, a course that belongs to the city and county of San Francisco.

A survey was conducted to confirm that bit of information, and now it's San Francisco's whale to dispose of.

Officials in Pacifica say they'll be happy to bury San Francisco's whale and send San Francisco a bill for the undertaking.

San Francisco officials are consulting a lawyer about the matter.
