Candidate's pets on the right side of the law

As a candidate for mayor I have enjoyed participating in various forums and speaking engagements. I have also walked the streets in various neighborhoods learning first hand the concerns of Carson City voters. One issue that has been repeatedly raised is if I have any illegal pets. Being as I was out of the country for the original article in the Appeal, I feel I need to respond. We have one dog and one cat. We have no illegal pets. However, on a recent Sunday morning, our sons captured nine potato bugs. Fortunately, they were released unharmed later that evening.

Aside from the candidates' pets, I believe there are many significant issues facing Carson City this election. To learn more about my position on these issues, please visit www.seanlehmann.com. Early voting for the primary election begins July 26th.

SEAN LEHMAN

CANDIDATE FOR MAYOR

Carson City

Editor's note: Mayoral candidate Sean Lehman's letter is in response to a June 4 story about pets owned by candidates, when he was unavailable for comment. That story reported that three of the six mayoral candidates had pets prohibited by city code. Mayoral candidates Pete Hansell and Steve McClung raise chickens and Bob Crowell has a pot bellied pig.

Downtown event was Carson at its best

This year's Taste of Downtown provided us all with another opportunity to enjoy a summer evening with our best downtown businesses. And while the stretch to walk was slightly shorter, the festive atmosphere extended well past the street barricades and midnight silencing of the bands. No question, we owe it all to the many organizers, businesses and volunteers who ensured the laughter, the stories, and the faces of years gone by, all made it home happy and safe.

Like so many other community events, such as A Taste of Downtown, Easter Sunday or the Nevada Day Parade, our own resident volunteers are the true backbone of our community and the reason for our continued success. This year I witnessed nearly 30 volunteer Sheriff's Reserve Deputies, Mounted Reserve Deputies, and Search and Rescue Unit members standing along the streets ready and willing to assist in any way they could. And in the character of our Carson City residents and visitors, helping out was all they did all evening long. The sole paid staff lieutenant overseeing the police operations reported no significant incidents, arrests or problems to deal with. This year's Taste of Downtown was Carson City at its finest; a Grand Slam!

To the organizers, the businesses, and all of their employees, thank you for a great evening out downtown style. And a special thanks to each and every volunteer, for all of the hard work and long hours you commit to this community, so often on a moment's notice. Carson City's volunteers give of themselves and have never let us down.
