Carson City

Candidates debate tonight

Candidates for Carson City mayor, supervisor and state assembly will debate tonight at 6 p.m. The "no frills" forum, hosted by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce, will take place at Marlette Hall at Western Nevada College.

The 16 candidates will face questions from Robert Morin, a political professor at Western Nevada College. The audience will be able to participate by submitting written questions.

None of the three school board candidates will be in the forum, since only one seat is contested and that by only one person.

Candidates for mayor include Bob Crowell, Pete Hansell, Ken Haskins, Sean Lehmann, Steve McClung and Jim Shirk. Mayor Marv Teixeira will not seek a fourth term.

Candidates for Ward 4 supervisor include McGrath, incumbent Richard Staub, Jean Bondiett, Andrew Salm and Molly Walt.

Candidates for Assembly District 40 are incumbent Bonnie Parnell, Cheryl Lau and John Wagner.

The college is located at 2201 W. College Parkway.

WNC late registration ends Friday

Late registration for summer classes at Western Nevada College continues through Friday. Classes begin today.

Earthquake preparedness program Wednesday

Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi will present "Drop, Cover, and Hold," a program on earthquake preparedness 6:30 p.m., Wednesday at the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop St. The program is free and open to the public. For information, call 887-2244.

Free breakfast program offered students

The Carson City School District sponsors a free breakfast and lunch program to children, between the ages of one and 18 years of age. The program starts today and lasts through August 15 at the Boys and Girls Club, 673 Stewart St.

Breakfast will be served from 8-9 a.m. and lunch will be served 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Tour the Carson River watershed

The Carson Water Subconservancy District will host a bus tour of the Carson River Watershed from the headwaters in Alpine County, Calif. to the Stillwater Wildlife Refuge near Fallon, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. June 26 and 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. June 27. The tour will begin at the Carson City Smith's grocery store parking lot, 599 E. William St. The cost to register is $75 before May 30 or $80 later. Lunch and snacks included. Teach your dog to avoid rattlesnakes

The Nevada Wildlife Federation, Wildlife Rescue Foundation and the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Reno are teaming up to provide Rattlesnake Avoidance classes beginning at 8 a.m. July 12, 13, and 26 at Washoe Lake State Park. Training is scheduled throughout the day. Entry fees are $60 for the first dog; $50 for the second dog and $40 for subsequent dogs by the same owner. A licensed snake handler will provide safety. Grand Sierra hosts Panic at the Disco

Grand Sierra Resort and Casino presents Las Vegas-based alternative rockers Panic at the Disco at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Grand Theatre.

Band members include Brendon Urie, vocals, guitar, keyboards; Ryan Ross, guitar, keyboards, vocals; Jon Walker, bass guitar, vocals and Spencer Smith, drums, percussion.

Give Hope group to hold benefit

The Give Hope Foundation is counting on the generosity of the local community to support its mission of helping children with catastrophic illnesses as it hosts its seventh annual fundraising event on Friday and Saturday.
