LaGrone leaves Nevada for Oregon State

Nevada junior Matt LaGrone has decided to leave the University of Nevada men's basketball team, he announced Thursday.

"It is with much thought and prayer that I have decided to leave the University of Nevada. I have decided to transfer to Oregon State and continue my collegiate career in football," LaGrone said. "I would like to thank all of my coaches for not only helping me develop my basketball skill but for helping me to become a man. I'd like to thank my teammates and the community for the support I received here at the University of Nevada."

A 6-8, 230-pound forward, LaGrone came to Nevada from McQueen High School. He averaged 2.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per game in 2007-08, his sophomore season. LaGrone played in 59 games with nine starts and turned in 1.5 points and 2.6 rebounds per contest in his two seasons at Nevada.

"Matt has decided to pursue his desire to play football with his brother. He's been a good kid. We appreciated his efforts and wish him well," Nevada coach Mark Fox said.

Elements soccer to hold tryouts

The Elements United under-11, under-12 and 13-14 girls soccer teams will hold open tryouts for the upcoming fall season.

Girls born between July 31, 1999 and August 1, 1994 are eligible. Tryouts will be held from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 9 at Lampe Park; 4-6 p.m. Saturday, July 12 at Lampe Park; 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 17 at South South's Kahle Park Soccer Field; and from noon-2 p.m. Saturday, July 19 at Kahle Park.

Pasco fires hole-in-one

Ed Pasco fired a hole-in-one on Saturday on the red course at Empire Ranch Golf Course.

He used a 9-iron from the white tee on the 116-yard eighth hole for his second ace in 3 years. Bryce Pasco, Steve Hircko and Bob Doyle witnessed the ace.

Crosstumblers set summer camps

Crosstumblers Gymnastics will again host three different gymnastics camps for the youth in Carson City.

"Each camp has a different theme," said director Steffany Walker. "Each theme is based on the levels of the gymnasts participating."

The first camp has a ninja theme and is designed for experienced gymnasts or team level gymnasts. It will be held June 23-27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $150 and includes more than four hours of gymnastics instruction each day as well as healthy snacks and lunches, crafts, games, contests, movies, and activities.

For children who have never tried the sport before through intermediate level gymnasts, Walker has organized an outer space themed camp. This camp runs July 7-11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost of $150 includes gymnastics lessons, snacks and lunches, crafts, and awards. The week concludes with an exhibition where the gymnasts show off their newly acquired skills and receive awards for their efforts.

For the youngest camper, a jungle themed mini camp is being offered on July 15-17 from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost for the mini camp is $60 for the three days or $30 daily and will include gymnastics classes, snack, and a craft.

Walker said the purpose of the camps is to allow gymnasts and future gymnasts a week to fully immerse themselves in the sport and find how fun it really can be.

"What I most want for the gymnasts is to enjoy the sport. Gymnasts usually start very young and it is a long time before they are able to publicly show off the results of their efforts. They need to have fun along the way," Walker said.

Walker has been coaching gymnastics for more than 20 years. She has coached all levels of gymnasts, both boys and girls, from preschool through National Championship competitors.

In addition to the camps, Crosstumblers will hold their regular weekly classes throughout the summer.

Bighorns games on the internet

Those interested can now listen to broadcasts of Nevada Bighorn games on the internet. Chris Graham is the play-by-play announcer for the games.

The Bighorns will next play the San Leandro Braves at 7 p.m. Friday at Governor's Field. The two teams will then play a doubleheader, beginning at noon on Saturday at Western Nevada College's John L. Harvey Field.

Saturday is Little League Day. All Little Leaguers wearing their uniforms will receive free admission. All players in attendance from the winning teams in Thursday Carson City Little League minors and majors championship games will also have the chance to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
