WOODLAND, Calif. " Yolo County authorities have launched a manhunt for a man who allegedly shot and killed a sheriff's deputy.

Yolo Sheriff's Capt. Robin Faille says the deputy, a 10-year veteran of the department, died overnight after being gunned down Sunday night.

Officers responding to a call that the deputy was shot found an abandoned baby in a car. The baby was reported safe.

Faille says officers have set up a large perimeter in the rural community of Dunnigan, about 175 miles southwest of Carson City, and were searching house to house. The search closed part of Interstate 5 to northbound traffic, creating a massive traffic backup.

The suspect, 35-year-old Marco Topete, is on parole for assault with a deadly weapon.
