New brochure to be unveiled

The Historical Society of Dayton Valley will unveil their new brochure at a special event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 2 at the Dayton Museum, 135 Shady Lane, Dayton.

Chasing Joy summer conference set

The Chasing Joy Summer Conference sponsored by Silver Hills Community Church will be 5 - 7 p.m. June 29 at the Dayton Valley Country and Golf Club at Legado's banquet room, 101 Palmer Drive, Dayton.

Soroptimists to hold yard sale

Soroptimist International of Dayton will hold its annual yard sale from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Our Park, on Highway 50 East in Dayton.

All proceeds are used to fund the scholarship program for graduating women from Dayton and Silver Stage High School. Donations may be tax deductible.

Fire district offers CPR class

The Central Lyon County Fire Protection District will offer a "Heart Saver" CPR class on Tuesday at the Sutro Station in Dayton.

Completion of this program will provide people with the basic skills necessary to safely recognize a medical emergency and what to do next, utilizing the Chain of Survival.

Students will be provided with reference texts and practice skills needed to provide effective CPR in the adult, child and infant patient. Additional education and practice will be provided for the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and relieving a foreign body airway obstruction.

Vendors sought for Dayton Valley Days

The 20th annual Dayton Valley Days will be Sept. 20-21 and will honor the buildings of yesterday with the theme, "Old Places, New Faces."

The Dayton Station historical railroad depot will be included, along with the other buildings from the community's past.

Money raised goes to the continued restoration of historic Old Town Dayton and aiding organizations that provide Christmas gifts to those in need, provide prevention and intervention, scholarships and provide support to other needs of the community. Call 246-3378 for a booth or other information.

Enrollment open for ambulance program

Central Lyon County Fire Protection District is offering the Frontier Saver Ambulance Subscription Service to the residents of Central Lyon County.

Signing up for the Frontier Saver Program will prevent expensive ambulance fees during a medical emergency. The program covers all non-reimbursed expenses for emergency ground ambulance transportation to area hospitals. Cost of the program is $65 for a household and $50 for a single person. Theater troupe to perform 'The Tempest'

Shakespeare on the Rocks is back at the Gold Hill Hotel as the Gold Hill Theater Troupe performs "The Tempest."

The play will be performed in the gazebo across Main Street from the hotel building at 8 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from July 24 to Aug. 9.

Cost for Thursdays is $15 for general admission and $20 for reserved seating; for Fridays and Saturdays it is $25 for general admission and $30 for reserved.

Silver City

Fireman's Ball planned for July 26

The first Fireman's Ball since the fire that destroyed the Silver City Schoolhouse Community Center will be held at 4 p.m. July 26 in Silver City.

The 2008 Fireman's Ball Fundraiser & Music Festival will benefit the Silver City Volunteer Fire Department, which backs up fire departments in Virginia City, Dayton and Carson City during emergencies.

The event will include live music, food, dancing, vendors, tie-dyed memorabilia and fun in the park. Performing will be Michelle Lundeen "the Queen of Steam" with Blues Streak all the way from San Diego, and local favorites Red Rose, Trippin Buddas, the Downwinders, and special guests starting at 4 p.m. Admission is free.

Booth space for vendors is available and there is no upfront charge for a booth. The fire department requests a donation of 20 percent to 50 percent of receipts at the end of the event.

This event dates back to the early 1970s and benefits the Volunteer Fire Department and the community. This year's Fireman's Ball includes the celebration of the rebuilt Schoolhouse community center. The historical structure burned down in 2004 and is now reopened.

Summer Reading program set

The Silver Stage Library's annual Summer Reading Program runs through July 23. The program is available for toddlers up to high school students.

Each Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. participants will hear a story and take part in crafts.

Sagebrush Serenade coming up

The Second annual Sagebrush Serenade will be held June 28 at Dressler Park on Highway 208 in Wellington.

Reporter John Tyson of KOLO-TV, will host the program featuring Richard Elloyan, cowboy, singer, songwriter, and poet. Local cowboy poets and musicians, Dusty and Donna Hustace, Sallie Knowles Joseph, Jay Joseph, Jon and Betsy Elliott, and Ed and Connie Kretschmer will open the evening show at 5 p.m. Craft booths and food and beverage stands will open at 3 p.m., and both a silent and live auction will be held.

Storey ambulance program ongoing

Open Enrollment for the Storey County Fire Department Ambulance Subscription program is through June 30 and is open to residents in the department's response area.

Cost is $25 per year per household, and $10 for those older than 55.

Excavations exhibit at St. Mary's

"Orphic Excavations," an exhibition by Anthony Alston at St. Mary's Art Center, is the product of a two-month long Capital City Arts Initiative artist residency.

The center is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Alston focused on unearthing veins in the epic tales surrounding Virginia City and the foundation of the St. Mary's Art Center. He has created an engaging site-specific installation.

As part of CCAI's Artists in Education program, Alston is also in residence at Carson High School. Born in Minnesota, Alston lives in Reno. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2007. Orphic Excavations will be on view through June 29. Call 847-7774.

Fourth Ward School offers parties

A tour of the historic town of Sutro is one of the Historic Fourth Ward School's parties of the year.

"Sutro Revisited: A Private Town and A Private Tour" will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 28.

The historic town of Sutro is privately owned by the Sutro Tunnel Company. Access to this historic property is prohibited except as a fundraising opportunity for the Historic Fourth Ward School.

Peter Leonard will lead a hike around the remaining structures, the tunnel and the mining artifacts and tell the story of Adolf Sutro, the construction and operation of the Sutro Tunnel, and the town.

The tour includes a barbecue lunch. Cost is $80 per person. Call 847-0975.

Fourth of July Parade set

Virginia City's Annual Fourth of July Spectacular will begin at noon July 4 with a grand parade featuring Jesse Cunally, a local Iraq War vet and his Marine squadron as grand marshals.

At 6 p.m. David John and the Comstock Cowboys will take the stage in the Delta Parking lot for the Second Amendment Celebration Concert. A Colt .45 will be raffled off during the concert.

Finally, a fantastic fireworks display will be presented courtesy of Lantis Fireworks.

V&T meeting set

Project Manager Kevin Ray will speak at the next meeting of the Virginia Truckee Railroad Historical Society at noon Saturday at the Ramada Inn, 100 North E St., Virginia City.

Ray of the reconstruction project will be on hand to explain the path ahead for the Virginia and Truckee Reconstruction project. The Railway Reflections Art Show coming this summer will also be discussed.

For wine and cheese enthusiasts, there will be a Ramada Manager's Meet'N'Greet on the Gray's Virginia and Truckee Railroad at 2:10 pm.

The meeting is free, as is the railroad trip for the first 10 passengers. All others pay $7.

Art exhibit at the history center

The "Dusty Roads Artists' Trail" comes home to the Comstock for an exhibit at the Comstock History Center, 20 North E St., Virginia City, It will be on display until July 20.

In August 2007, six Nevada visual artists were selected to spend a week creating at the historic St. Mary's Art Center in Virginia City. The Comstock History Center is now hosting an exhibition of their work the "Dusty Roads Artists' Trail."

Featured artists include Sidne Teske, Francheskaa Clark, Carol Brown, Erik Holland, Julie La Croix, and Karen Kreyeski. The culmination of their hard work became a 26-piece exhibit that will travel throughout Nevada.

Carson mayoral candidate to speak at V&T meeting

A town hall meeting on the V&T reconstruction and hosted by the V&T Historical Preservation group will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ramada Inn, 100 North E St., Virginia City.

The meeting will be followed by a meet-and-greet train ride on the V&T with Ramada Inn manager Shara Bouvier.

Carson City mayoral candidate Sean Lehmann and Kevin Ray, Project Coordinator for the V&T Reconstruction Commission, will speak.
