Perez set for run at national queen

Karysa Perez, a senior at Silver State High School was honored by Ariat Boot Company of Union City, Calif., with a pair of Ariat Boots for being named the Nevada State High School Rodeo Queen for 2008-2009 at the Nevada State High School Rodeo Finals which concluded this past weekend in Winnemucca.

Perez won Miss Congeniality, Horsemanship, Impromptu, Prepared Speech, Personality, Interview, and the written test. Among other sponsors for Perez, who competes for the Carson-Douglas Rodeo Club, are Bobby Page's Cleaners and Casino Fandango. Perez also donates her time to the Black Stallion Literacy Project which visits local schools to promote reading, rodeo and responsibility.

Perez will spend the next three weeks preparing for the National High School Finals Rodeo to be held in Farmington, N.M. July 20-26. Perez will competing against 47 other queens from 41 states, five Canadian Provinces and Australia for the title of National High School Rodeo Queen.

Atlas knocks off Reno Uniters

Carson Atlas, an under-11 boys soccer team from the Sierra Nevada Soccer League beat the Reno Junior Uniters 8-7 on Sunday at James Lee Park. Ernesto "Pelon" Hernandez scored on a header off of a cross from Christopher Ortiz to give the Atlas a 2-0 lead.

The Atlas led 5-2 at halftime. Johnny Garcia and Hernandez each scored twice and Ortiz, Miguel Calderon and Jose Garcia all added a goal. Juanito Camerena scored four of his five goals in the second half and Henry Zavore and Kevin Barrera each added a goal for Reno.

Tonight the Atlas will take on Carson City Chelsea at 8 p.m. at James Lee Park in a battle for first place in the Sierra Nevada Soccer League's under-11 division. In the first meeting between the two teams, the Atlas won 5-3.

Chelsea has an impressive 5-1 won over Acel Troutman's under-11 team. It was the first loss for the South Tahoe team to a Carson-based team in more than two years.

Regalo under 14-girls to hold tryouts

SBSC Regalo, the Great Basin Youth Soccer League's girls under-13 Spring League Champions, is seeking skilled players born after August 1, 1994 and before July 31, 1995 and those born after July 31, 1995 who are entering the eight grade.

Tryouts are slated for Friday, July 11 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday, July 15 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Virginia Foothills Park (next to Brown Elementary School) in South Reno.

Coach Mike Simon, a former professional player at national and international levels with more than 35 years of experience, is recognized for his Mike Simon Soccer Camps and coaches Sierra Nevada College.

The Regalo under-14 Team is a member of the Sagebrush Soccer Club and plays in the GBYSL with players from Reno, the Carson area, Incline Village, and Truckee.
