LOS ANGELES " A Los Angeles jury has convicted a man of 11 counts of first-degree murder for causing a 2005 commuter train derailment.

The jury on Thursday also convicted 29-year-old Juan Alvarez of one count of arson but acquitted him of a count called train wrecking.

Alvarez claimed he was only trying to kill himself when he parked an SUV on railroad tracks on Jan. 26, 2005, and caused a Metrolink train to derail and strike a second Metrolink train.

In addition to the 11 deaths, about 180 people were injured.
