The Carson High softball team kept its momentum from Friday to finish the Preseason Tournament of Champions near Sacramento.
Carson won two more games on Saturday to take ninth place in its bracket of the tournament. After an opening 9-0 loss to Fallon on Thursday, the Senators won four straight games. On Saturday, Carson beat West Campus of Sacramento 7-1 and Rosemont, Calif., 5-1.
Nikki Keller and Daria Leid both turned in outstanding complete game efforts on Saturday.
Carson coach Scott Vickrey said its team continued the momentum it built from Friday when it pulled out a thrilling 7-3 win in nine innings against Will C. Wood. "It started last night and got better today," Vickrey said. "The girls played well."
Against Rosemont, Keller pitched a one-hitter, striking out nine over seven innings. "Nikki Keller pitched fantastic and the girls stepped up defensively," Vickrey said.
The Senators scored all their runs in the third inning. Katie McEwan belted a two-run triple and Hannah Shaw, Christa Casci and Cassie Vondrak all had RBI singles during the rally.
Shaw, Vondrak and Abby Rankl all had two hits and Keller, Leid and Krista Mattice all added a hit.
Against Rosemont, Leid pitched a complete game two-hitter, striking out seven over six innings.
In the top of the first, Casci led off with a single, stole second and scored on Rankl's RBI single. Carson added three runs in the second. Mattice had an RBI single during the rally.
The Senators added three more runs in the sixth. Keller and Mattice each had an RBI single during the rally. Leid went 3-for-4 and Mattice and Casci each had two hits.
