LANCASTER, Calif. " A man was found dead on a street Tuesday with an arrow in his chest, authorities said.
The victim, believed to be in his 60s, was found about 1:45 a.m., after motorists reported a possible traffic accident, Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Oscar Butao said.
"I got out the car and I saw blood running off his body," Kenneth Elliott, who stopped to help, told KTTV-TV. "As soon as the police and paramedics and fire department got here and they touched him and rolled him over, they saw a bow and arrow in his chest."
"First reaction was wow, why would somebody do that to an elderly person?"
No arrests were made and there were no suspects in the apparent homicide, Butao said.
"The victim was believed to have been a local transient," Butao said, but his identity was not immediately released.
Witnesses told several television reporters that the man was known for carrying a cane and taking long walks through the area.
Lancaster is about 45 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.
