Arnold stars for Carson in Sac City Invite

First-year Carson track and field coach Robert Maw didn't need to find out the final scores of the team standings in order to ascertain how well his Carson Senators performed in Saturday's 25-team Sacramento State Invitational at Hughes Stadium on the campus of Sacramento City College.

"We had quite a few kids [who had personal records]. I'm pleased," Maw said. "It was nice weather and a good event. We used it as a training opportunity to keep building on. We did. I'm real proud."

Carson's Mike Arnold was one of the Carson competitors who had a PR, clearing 15 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault event, with his closest competitor finishing 3 feet behind him.

Arnold tried to beat Carson's school record 15-10 when he went for a jump of 15-11, but fell short on that attempt. Maw said he expects Arnold to do some great things in the near future - perhaps as early as Wednesday, when Carson competes in a track meet at Douglas High School.

"I think Mike Arnold will be going for the school record," Maw said. "I think he'll be jumping low-16s by the end of the season - 17 if he works hard. We'll see how he does."

Caleb Carter led three Carson runners in the long jump, with a 20-2 effort to finish fourth. Evan Pearson (19-8) finished sixth and Nick Peternell (19-3 1/2) took seventh.

In other boys field events, freshman Blake McCoy (91-0), Jae Chun (84-11) and Jamie Hack (74-0) finished seventh, eighth and ninth in the discus. Maw said McCoy's 114-foot toss didn't count because he needed a 115-foot effort to qualify. If the effort were counted, he would've finished fourth.

Floyd Hernandez took seventh in the 400-meter event and Richard Schroy took 10th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4 minutes, 47 seconds, his PR.

Ryjul Stokes finished fourth in the JV 100 with a 12:39.

On the girls' side, Kayla Sanchez, competing in her first meet of the year, finished third in the 100 at 12.73. Teammate Christy Works finished seventh (13:37) in the event, but took fourth (59:09) to lead the Senators in the 400. Sanchez took fifth in the event with a 59:29, followed by Gloria Sosa in ninth (1:01.7) and Julianne King (1:02.16) in 10th.

The Senators, led by Works, King, Sosa and Sanchez, took third in the sprint medley relay event and third in the 4 x 400 relay. The quartet finished the 400 in 4:11, shaving 9 seconds off their best time.

In the long jump, Carson was led by Sara Anderson (13-10), who finished seventh. Stephanie Adams (13-4) took eighth and freshman Brittany Dixon took 13th.
