Two more seniors doing good deeds

If anyone found a pot 'o gold yesterday, just remember it's now worth $1,000 an ounce and we would be glad to share it with you. In this vein, the Sagebrush Sons of Erin were out and about this weekend gathering a LARGE stone to place on someone's lawn early yesterday morning. What the "victim," Bret Andreas, didn't know, was that the rock they had HIM pick out on his property was destined for the front of his insurance agency. As they so "nicely" interpreted it, he was "to wit ... an unknowing, slow witted, victim of his own undoing." Gee ... those leprechauns can be mean. Anyway, we hope it was the "top of the morning" to Bret, and that he was "pleasantly surprised." Wethinks, a pint is in order.

It's senior project time, and we've come across two Carson High School seniors who are doing some really good things. This week, Isaac Holt is holding "Hit the Greens at Thunder Canyon," to raise money for the Carson High Golf Team. It will start at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 24, at Thunder Canyon Golf Club, and costs $60, which includes a box lunch. To sign up, and help Isaac and the golf team, call him at 720-3574, and reserve a slot. For all of you who golf, this is a great time to do it and help him out. The second project, is on Friday, April 11 at the Governor's Mansion from 6-8 p.m. and will benefit "Food for Thought (they feed children of the homeless)." Senior Cari Holmes has put together "A Night on Broadway" with the Reno Dance Company (she will dance, too), with a buffet dinner catered by Mallards and their Executive Chef, Don Rudin. Tickets are on sale at the Sugar Pine Cove for $35 per person. There will also be a raffle and silent auction. Both Cari and Isaac are to be congratulated, thanked and supported for their hard work. We hope you sign up for both.

NDOT had a Pi day ... 3-14 at 1:59 p.m. ... and served pie. Clever (for those of you who don't get it, go back to Math 101). Carolyn was in line first, but Russ Law and Dale Lindsey came in the back door and got to the pies before she did, dang it. Carol sends congratulations to Marty and Renee on their upcoming marriage; and Happy Birthday to Brian Whalen, Jr. on his upcoming natal day from his dear old auntie.

We always love to hear about how successful the Carson High Culinary Arts team is doing. They are off to nationals again, thanks to the tutelage of their instructor, Penny Reynolds. If you'd like to donate to their trip, please do so at CHS Culinary Arts, P. O. Box 603, Carson City, NV 89702. They would really appreciate it. Also, Carson City Search and Rescue is holding a wine tasting and silent auction on Saturday, April 12 at 6 p.m. at the Plaza Hotel, 801 S. Carson St. It will benefit their search and rescue efforts when needed. Tickets are $20 each, and can be obtained by calling 720-5663. Should be a fun evening, and, if you get lost, you'll at least know who's rescuing you.

The Western Nevada College Wildcats will open their home baseball season on Friday at noon with a double-header against Colorado Northwestern Community College at John Harvey field. This is a great chance to get outdoors, slather on the sunscreen, eat a few hot dogs, root on the home team, and have a stupendous time. Go Wildcats! The Western Nevada Astronomical Society will meet tonight at the Jack C. Davis Observatory (on the WNC campus) at 7 p.m. Everyone's welcome to see the stars and hear Jim Bean speak about the observatory's new equipment. Don't forget they have Star Parties every Saturday after dark that are free and open to the public.

Connie Lord sent us this one: "A new greeter at Wal-Mart was late almost every day. The boss was in a quandary because he really was a good worker. Finally, the boss called him into the office and addressed his tardiness. 'Charley, I like your work ethic, you do a bang up job, you're a team player, but, we have to do something about you being late.' 'Yes, I know, Boss ... I'm working on it.' 'Well, good,' says the boss, 'that's what I like to hear, though it's odd, you coming in late. I know you're retired from the Air Force, so what did they say if you came in late there?' 'They said, 'Good morning, General.' "

Geraldine Ferraro (a former Democratic candidate for vice president) went into political hell last week by stating Sen. Barack Obama would not be where he is if he were not black. Sen. Clinton decried the statement, and many people called it "racism" and "unbelievable," etc. Think about it, though ... is she not stating the truth, political "correctness" be damned? Were he white, would he be the front runner? If Clinton were not a woman, would she? If McCain were not a war hero, would he be the Republican pick? Probably not, on all counts. But fate takes us into unusual places. And they are what they are, and where they are. All three seem to be good people, but Ferraro was right, and could have expanded her statement to all of them - given their real credentials, are they the best? Only time will tell ... and we hope any of them, whomever's elected, can bring our credibility back from where the current administration has dumped it. So, before you go ballistic, THINK ABOUT IT. Sometime's the truth is the truth.

C.W. Cravin found a great typo in the paper a week or so ago. He was reading the editorial in the Appeal and it said it was "approved by the Appeal Editorial Boar." He wants to know where they keep the boar? And he didn't realize a boar was on the editorial board. Gee, C.W., it's equal rights for animals. PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (OR, "people for eating tasty animals" ... another of Ron's "bumper stickers), would probably approve.
