Elk's Club awards annual scholarships

Each year all of the local organizations within our community give monetary awards to well-deserving organizations, graduating seniors and individuals that make a difference. We rarely get to hear about how much all these organizations do to assist local programs, but I do get an update occasionally and think it should be shared. The Local Carson City Elk's Club awarded the following in scholarships to assist some amazing individual and organization making big differences behind the scenes in Carson City as well as changing lives.

ELK'S CLUB RECOGNIZE LOCAL ADVOCATES

Individuals:

Carson High School senior, Nicole Prentice received a $1,500 scholarship for college.

Linda Davis with the Carson City Sheriff's Department Youth Programs received $500 for all her hard work with youth in our community.

Organizations:

Austin's House: Linda Cuddy received $500 for an amazing shelter that assists in placing children that have been abused and neglected.

Do Drop Inn Shelter: Dee Dee Foremaster received $500 for the homeless shelter to help assist those in need that are sometimes forgotten within the community.

Soroptimist Whole Child: Received $500 to purchase shoes for children that otherwise would not have a pair of shoes that fit.

Congratulations to the Elk's Lodge for the selection of each of the recipients this year that do so much for others and with their help can do more.

Speaking of great individuals and causes, here is one that will always be a top priority Ð children and food. Food for Thought is a local organization that provides more than 100 elementary-age children from Fritsch, Fremont, Empire and Bordewich Bray bags filled with nutritious and nonperishable meals to take home over the weekends. Homeless children reside throughout Carson City and need food. Carson High School Senior Cari Holmes is stepping in to make a difference. Come join her and the Reno Dance Company in presenting, "A Night of Broadway." The fundraiser is planned at the Governor's Mansion and will be a beautiful night for a great cause, so check it out. You can drop in at Teri Basa's Sugar Pine Cove to purchase tickets or drop off donations.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

What: A Night of Broadway entertainment, provided by the Reno Dance Company to benefit Food for Thought. Semi-formal attire is kindly recommended.

I always try to find things in the community that all age groups can enjoy, and just because these regular dance lessons are being held at the Senior Center doesn't mean it's not for you. The Carson City Senior Citizens Center's Web site says its mission is to enhance the quality of life and autonomy of individuals 60 and older through a broad range of services, one that caught my eye was the ballroom dance lessons. All ages are welcome and it's open to anyone who would like to learn how to ballroom dance. So grab a partner and get ready for a lesson.

CARSON CITY SENIOR CITIZENS CENTER

What: Learn Ballroom Dancing

Where: Carson City Senior Citizens Center, Nevada Room, 911 Beverly Drive

When: 11 a.m.-noon every Wednesday through April 30.

Cost: All ages welcome; cost $5 per person.

Here is a new group that's only a year old, but if you want to learn to dance and swing with the best of them, it's worth checking out. This dance group is open to the public, no partner needed, but if you have one bring them along. The next session is being conducted by Donna Ewing who is teaching Mambo No. 5. The High Sierra Swing Dance Club is a great way of having fun while getting exercise and learning West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, a little bit of county and some Latin moves.

HIGH SIERRA SWING DANCE CLUB

What: Swing dance lessons and dance party.

Where: Brewery Art Center, 449 W. King St.

When: 7 p.m., and a social dance party featuring DJ Joel Johnson runs from 8-10:30 p.m. Saturday.

Cost: Cost of dance workshop is $7; social dance is $7 for club members (including sister clubs) and $10 for nonmembers.
