Works, Sosa lead Carson High track

Christy Works and Gloria Sosa formed a dynamic duo for the Carson High girls track team at the Northwest Invitational on Saturday at McQueen High School.

Works and Sosa each went 1-2 in the three events that they competed in. Carson had five girls and three boys at the meet.

In the 100 meters, Works won in 12.69 seconds while Sosa was second in 13.0. In the 200, Works won in 26.13 while Sosa was second in 26.75.

Both Works and Sosa had outstanding early season times in going 1-2 in the 400. Works won, going under one minute for the second straight meet in 59.75 seconds. Sosa was right behind in second in1:00.

"A great 1-2 combination today out of those two girls," Carson coach Robert Maw said.

Also for Carson's girls, Christy Tom took fourth in the discus and third in the shot put. Brittany Dixon was ninth in the discus and shot put and Meagan Craig also competed.

For Carson's boys, Floyd Hernandez was fourth in the 100 in 11.12, second in the 200 in 22.47 and fifth n the 400 in 52.62. Caleb Carter was sixth in the 400 in 52.75, 10th in the 100, ninth in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump at 39 feet, four inches.

In addition, Richard Shroy was sixth in the 1,600 in 4:50 and third in the 3,200 in 10:40.

"For a handful of kids, a really good job," Maw said. "I'm really pleased with them."

Estes has strong outing for Padres

Shawn Estes had his best outing of the spring on Saturday in his effort to make the San Diego Padres opening day roster as their fifth starter.

The 1991 Douglas High graduate picked up the win in the Padres 3-2 victory in 10 innings over the Kansas City Royals. Estes pitching two scoreless innings, not allowing a hit while striking out two and walking one.

Dayton baseball splits vs. Truckee

The Dayton High baseball team ended up splitting a doubleheader with Truckee on Saturday to take two of three in the Northern 3A series.

Truckee won the opener 9-6 while Dayton came back to win the nightcap 7-1. Dayton also won the series opener 18-1 on Wednesday.

Cory Yoder picked up the two wins in the series, allowing just one earned run over 11 innings in his two games. Anthony Onstott and Tim Doyle both had home runs in the series.

Doyle also hit .625 and had 6 RBI in the series. Konrad Perkins and Houston Berntson each had 5 RBI in the series.

"I thought we played well Wednesday, but had a bit of a letdown today," Dayton coach Jerrod Merrell said. "I was happy that the kids rallied back after a loss in game one today to win the second one and win the series."

Dayton softball sweeps Truckee

McKenzie Cole had a banner day for the Dayton High softball team in its sweep against Truckee on Saturday.

Dayton (6-1 overall, 6-0 in the Northern 3A) won the opener 6-1 and the nightcap 7-6 in eight innings. Cole was the winning pitcher in both games, finishing with 21 strikeouts in 101Ú3 innings. She also went 5-for-5 with a two-run home run, two doubles, three RBI and three runs in the nightcap and scored the winning run on Natasha Wells' game-winning hit.

In the opener, Cole pitched a complete game, striking out 13 while walking none and hitting a batter. She allowed five hits.

Brittany Burrows was 2-for-4 with two runs, Brittany Hill had a hit, Sierra Barnwell was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI and Nicole Iratcabal added a hit and a run. In the nightcap, Cole and Barnwell singled, then Wells came through with the game-winning hit with two outs.

Barnwell started on the mound and struck out seven over 42Ú3 innings while giving up three earned runs. Cole struck out eight over 32Ú3 innings while allowing one run for the win.

Melissa Goetz was 3-for-5 with three runs, Barnwell and Wells each went 2-for-5, Miriah Collins had a hit and an RBI and Hill went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Viginia City softball drops two to Wells

The Virginia City softball team dropped a doubleheader to Wells on Friday, losing the opener 19-10 and the nightcap 17-9.

In the opener, Megan Culleton went 2-for-3 with a home run, Sophie Glogovac reached base five times as she was 2-for-2 with four RBI and three walks, Brooke Bonnett was 2-for-3 with three RBI, Alexa Ballinger was 3-for-5 with an RBI and Brittany Bomar went 1-for-2. In the nightcap, Culleton and Kelly Smiley each went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Katie Defebaugh was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Shaye Segale, Bonnett, Jesse Baily and Amanda Bohl all added a hit and an RBI.
