Former justice of the peace dies

Former East Fork Justice of the Peace Max LaMar Jones, 91, died Friday.

The longtime Carson Valley resident was involved in many civic causes over the years. He was the East Fork Township Justice of the Peace for 10 years, was a member and president of the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, director of Douglas County Civil Defense, a scout master, a Douglas County School Board member for two terms, a member and president of the Carson Valley Active 20-30 Club and a charter member of the Carson Valley Lions Club.

He was a volunteer firefighter for 32 years, and was a founding member of the Douglas County Sheriff's Posse, which he served on for 10 years. He enjoyed participating in the Pony Express re-ride each year.

In 1939, he managed the Safeway store in Gardnerville, then, after the store closed, he took over the lease and opened the Gardnerville Food Store, which he operated until 1963 when he went into the insurance business for Farmer's Insurance.

He was the first presiding elder for the Carson Valley Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1979, he and his wife served an 18-month mission for the church in North Carolina. He also worked in the Oakland, Calif., Temple and the Reno Temple, and had served the Carson City Nevada Stake as Patriarch for approximately 20 years.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel at Spruce Street and Deseret Drive in Minden. A viewing will also be held prior to the funeral service 11:30-12:30 p.m.
