Veterans to hold Memorial Day event

At 9 a.m. Monday Dayton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8660 will honor all service men and women who have given their lives in the defense of the United States. The public is welcome to attend.

Chaplain Michael A. Bigelow, LCDR, NAS Fallon, will speak. American Legion Post No. 56 Honor Guard will present a Flag Folding Ceremony, a 14-Rifle Echo Firing Squad and their bugler will play TAPS.

The Boy Scouts of America, Troop 100, will give a flag presentation.

Chaplain Bigelow's decorations include the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Achievement Medal with two Gold Stars and other unit decorations.

Prior to entering the ministry, the chaplain served on the USS Nimitz, CVN-68, for four years where he served in the Reactor Room as Chief Reactor Watch, senior in-rate watchstation.

Fire Department golf tournament to benefit kids

The Central Lyon County Fire Protection District will hold its 4th annual CLCFD Kids to Burn Camp Golf Tournament at 8 a.m. June 7 at Dayton Valley Country Club at Legado.

Proceeds will be used to send kids to Firefighters Kids Camp at Lake Tahoe, and to support the Central Lyon County Burn Fund.

Last year, the fire district was able to send four children to camp. The Firefighters' Kids Camp is a recovery program that provides young burn survivors with a fun and safe camp environment that encourages healing, personal growth and character development.

The CLCF Burn Fund is seeking sponsors, donors and players. Sponsors will be recognized at the tees with a sign bearing the name of the person or company sponsoring the hole. Raffle prizes will be awarded throughout the day. There will also be a chance to win a new car with a hole-in-one.

Vendors sought for Dayton Valley Days

The 20th annual Dayton Valley Days will be Sept. 20-21 and will honor the buildings of yesterday with the theme, "Old Places, New Faces."

The Dayton Station historical railroad depot will be included, along with the other buildings from the community's past.

Money raised goes to the continued restoration of historic Old Town Dayton and aiding organizations that provide Christmas gifts to those in need, provide prevention and intervention, scholarships and provide support to other needs of the community.

Enrollment open for ambulance program

Central Lyon County Fire Protection District is offering the Frontier Saver Ambulance Subscription Service to the residents of Central Lyon County. Signing up for the Frontier Saver Program will prevent expensive ambulance fees during a medical emergency.

The program covers all non-reimbursed expenses for emergency ground ambulance transportation to area hospitals. Cost of the program is $65 for a household and $50 for a single person.

Silver City

Youth program set

Silver City's Summer Youth Program will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mondays and Tuesdays from June 16 to Aug. 12, and is open to all area children ages 5 to 15.

Parents are required to stay and help with the program.

Activities will include yoga, basketball, beading, macramé and art, film workshop, music lessons, theater workshop, field trips, reading, history tours and more.

This program is funded through the Silver City Case for Change Task Force and Healthy Communities Coalition, local used book sales, Nevada Arts Council, Dayton Food Bank, and Lyon County Recreation. Call 847-0742.

Youth event planned

The New Hope Christian Fellowship is holding a free youth event at 10 a.m. June 7 off Fir Street.

There will be live performances by recording artists Justin Fox, Risen, Chris Heifner, Brian Partridge and other bands.

Virginia City

Vietnam vet to lead 'Heroes' parade

Virginia City will celebrate Memorial Day with a Celebration of Heroes Parade down C Street beginning at noon Saturday.

There will also be special salute to Vietnam veterans, with grand marshal Angus Kittle of Arizona leading the way. He will be riding in the Happy Hoofers Carriage.

The Celebration of Heroes Parade is held on Saturday of the Memorial Day weekend to avoid interfering with ceremonies vets hold at area cemeteries. It is held to honor the sacrifices of veterans, particularly those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Veterans groups, horse groups, antique cars and more are expected.

Theater Muckers perform 'Stopped Interrupting'

The Virginia City High School Theater Muckers will alternately perform a play and a one-act festival from May 29-31 at the High School Commons.

"Stopped Interrupting" the full-length play, will be May 30 and June 1 at 7 p.m. Four one-act plays will be performed on May 29 and May 31 at 7 p.m.

Storey ambulance subscription program begins

Open Enrollment for the Storey County Fire Department Ambulance Subscription program is through June 30. It is open to all residents within the department's response area.

Cost is $25 per year per household, and $10 for those older than 55.

Antique Faire to raise funds for fire department

The annual Virginia City Antique Faire will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Virginia City Fire Station on North C Street, Virginia City.

Proceeds benefit the Virginia City Volunteer Fire Department.

Excavations exhibit at St. Mary's

"Orphic Excavations," an exhibition by Anthony Alston at St. Mary's Art Center, is the product of a two-month long Capital City Arts Initiative artist residency.

The center is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Alston focused on unearthing veins in the epic tales surrounding Virginia City and the foundation of the St. Mary's Art Center. He has created an engaging site-specific installation.

As part of CCAI's Artists in Education program, Alston is also in residence at Carson High School. Born in Minnesota, Alston lives in Reno. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2007. Orphic Excavations will be on view through June 29.

Piper's hosts Old West auction, concert

Piper's Opera House will host the Spanish Springs Old West Auction Viewing and Cowboy Concert at 5 p.m. May 30-31, with a preview of a Western collectible auction featuring antique firearms, vintage bits and spurs, saddles, Western books and papers, knives, chaps and chinks, gambling items, Western furniture, Indian items, cavalry and Western movie items, and more.

Cowboy crooners will put on a show during the preview.

New V&T group to meet

Since the end of the line for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad was May 31, 1950, a new V&T Historical Preservation group will meet at 4 p.m. on May 31, at the Ramada Inn.

A short video on the railroad will be shown, the controversial abandonment will be discussed and audience participation is welcome.

The Ramada Inn will host a meet-and-greet at 5 p.m. after the meeting.
