Carson swimmers fare well in regional prelims

Carson High School's swimmers enjoyed a successful day in the pool during preliminaries at the Northern 4A Regional Swimming Championships at the Carson Aquatic Facility Friday afternoon.
"I think most everybody moved up [in terms of time,]" Carson coach Monica Weaver. "It was a good day for us."
The finals and consolation finals are scheduled to begin today at 2 p.m.
The top three finishers advance to next Saturday's state finals at UNLV.
Two swimmers - Kevin Dyer and Clayton Garrett - turned in first-place finishes.
Dyer came into the 500 free event with a time of 5 minutes, 17 seconds. He swam an impressive 5:03.15. He also placed fifth in the 100-yard butterfly with a 58.24.
Garrett was timed in a 1:01.68 in the 100-yard breaststroke. He also was fourth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.81).
Matt Grunert had a solid day, qualifying third in the 100 free (49.74) and fourth in the 50 free (23.08). There is only a little more than a second separating the top three qualifiers in the 100 free.
Albert Reed took 10 seconds off his 500 free time, clocking a 5:19.48, which was good enough for the sixth qualifying spot.
Jacob Cornwell lowered his time in the 200 free, clocking a 1:53.76, while Nick Schlager qualified fifth in the 200 free in 1:58.61.
Paul Chang was fifth in the 50 free, clocking a 23:24, just .16 behind Grunert. He also was fourth in the 100 breaststroke.
On the girls' side, Julie Asire had a tremendous day for Carson.
She qualified third in the 50 free, clocking a 23.98, and followed that up with a fourth-place qualifying effort in the 100-yard free in 56.63.
Tatum Boehnke qualified sixth in two events - the 100-yard butterfly in 1:04.60 and the 500 free in 5:31.54.
Jamie Showalter barely missed the finals in the 100-yard back in 1:07.57 which was good for the ninth qualifying spot. She also was 12th in the 50 free with a 27.18.
Julia Lapham was 19th in the 200 IM.
