Spaghetti dinner to benefit injured girl

A spaghetti dinner will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Dayton Elementary School to raise funds for Lindsay Davidson, 7, who was seriously injured when hit by a car while crossing Dayton Valley Road. The driver had no insurance.

A raffle also will be held at the school, 285 Old Dayton Valley Road, Dayton. Tickets are $15 for a family of four and $1 for each additional child or $5 per adult and $3 per child under 13. Items in the raffle were donated by local businesses. The event is being hosted by the Dayton Elementary School Booster Club.

Veterans to hold Memorial Day event

At 9 a.m. May 26, Dayton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8660 will honor all service men and women who have given their lives in the defense of the United States. The public is welcome to attend.

Chaplain Michael A. Bigelow, LCDR, NAS Fallon, will speak. American Legion Post No. 56 Honor Guard will present a Flag Folding Ceremony, a 14-Rifle Echo Firing Squad and their bugler will play TAPS.

The Boy Scouts of America, Troop 100, will give a flag presentation.

Chaplain Bigelow's decorations include the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Achievement Medal with two Gold Stars and other unit decorations. Prior to entering the ministry, the chaplain served on the USS Nimitz, CVN-68, for four years where he served in the Reactor Room as Chief Reactor Watch, senior in-rate watchstation.

Wine and appetizer fundraiser for county candidate

A wine and appetizer fundraiser to benefit Lyon County Commission District II candidate Donna Kristaponis will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at 690 St. Andrews Drive, Dayton.

Wine will be from Tahoe Ridge Winery, with appetizers provided by friends of the campaign. Recommended donation is $40 a couple; $25 per person. RSVP to 241-2212.

Vendors sought for Dayton Valley Days

The 20th annual Dayton Valley Days will be Sept. 20-21 and will honor the buildings of yesterday with the theme, "Old Places, New Faces."

The Dayton Station historical railroad depot will be included, along with the other buildings from the community's past. Money raised goes to the continued restoration of historic Old Town Dayton and aiding organizations that provide Christmas gifts to those in need, provide prevention and intervention, scholarships and support to other needs of the community. Fire department golf tournament to benefit kids

The Central Lyon County Fire Protection District will hold its 4th Annual CLCFD Kids to Burn Camp Golf Tournament at 8 a.m. June 7 at Dayton Valley Country Club at Legado. Proceeds will help send kids to Firefighters Kids Camp at Lake Tahoe, and to support the Central Lyon County Burn Fund.

Last year, the fire district was able to send four children to the camp, a recovery program that provides young burn survivors with a fun and safe camp environment that encourages healing, personal growth and character development.

The CLCF Burn Fund is seeking sponsors, donors and players. Sponsors will be recognized at the tees with a sign bearing the name of the person or company sponsoring the hole. Raffle prizes will be awarded. There will also be a chance to win a new car with a hole-in-one. Call Chuck Ritter at 246-6209.

Enrollment open for ambulance program

Central Lyon County Fire Protection District is offering the Frontier Saver Ambulance Subscription Service to the residents of Central Lyon County. Signing up for the Frontier Saver Program will prevent expensive ambulance fees during a medical emergency.

The program covers all non-reimbursed expenses for emergency ground ambulance transportation to area hospitals. Cost of the program is $65 for a household and $50 for a single person.

Jazz trio to perform

The Churchill Arts Council will present a performance by one of the most innovative ensembles in contemporary jazz, The Bad Plus, at the Oats Park Art Center, 151 E. Park St., Fallon, Saturday at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7 and there will be a no-host bar.

The sound of this trio is distinctive, formidable, cerebral and anarchic, exploding notions of what a jazz piano trio should sound like.

Silver City

Youth program includes yoga, basketball and arts

Silver City's Summer Youth Program will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mondays and Tuesdays from June 16 to August 12, and is open to all area children ages 5 to 15.

Parents are required to stay and help with the program.

Activities will include yoga, basketball, beading, macramé and art, film workshop, music lessons, theater workshop, field trips, reading, history tours, and more.

This program is funded through the Silver City Case for Change Task Force and Healthy Communities Coalition, local used book sales, Nevada Arts Council, Dayton Food Bank, and Lyon County Recreation. Call 847-0742.

Virginia City

Historic preservation event this weekend

This Historic Fourth Ward School hosts the annual Comstock Historic Preservation Weekend today through Sunday.

On Friday, events begin at 10 a.m. with the Kaitty Holland Clothing Collection, which includes her 1870 wedding dress, day dress and numerous ensembles demonstrating the clothing and style of an 1870-1890 Comstock miner's wife. At 5:30 p.m. the Parties of the Year kickoff will begin.

On Saturday, historic Comstock walking tours will be given from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a donation of $25. A Letterpress printing workshop will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and a brown-bag lunch at noon. The 14th annual Comstock Children's Chorus will perform from 2 to 3 p.m.

Jazz, blues and swing star to perform

The Lulu La Fever Duo of Phoenix, will play their jazz, blues and swing sounds at 7:30 p.m. today at Piper's Opera House, 12 North B St., Virginia City.

Open house features wine, music, art

Piper's Opera House will host an open house with music, an art show and wine tasting from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

The event will feature a wine-tasting with Nevada wines from the Tahoe Ridge Gallery, Churchill Vineyards and the Pahrump Valley Wineries. Music will be performed by local musicians including Glenn Buschine, formerly of the Comstock Cowboys.

Also, the Comstock Arts Council Spring Art Show will be held, featuring Nevada artists. Tickets are $30 in advance; $35 at the door.

Storey ambulance subscription program

Open Enrollment for the Storey County Fire Department Ambulance Subscription program is through June 30. It is open to all residents within the department's response area. Cost is $25 per year per household, and $10 for those older than 55. If you are older the age of 55 the cost is only $10 per year.

Antique Faire to raise funds for VC fire department

The annual Virginia City Antique Faire will be 10 a.m., May 24 at the Virginia City Fire Station on North C Street. Proceeds benefit the Virginia City Volunteer Fire Department. Call 847-0954 for details.

Excavations exhibit at St. Mary's

"Orphic Excavations," an exhibition by Anthony Alston at St. Mary's Art Center, is the product of a two-month long Capital City Arts Initiative artist residency.

A reception for the artist will be May 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. SMACenter at 55 North R St., Virginia City. Admission is free. The center is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Alston focused on unearthing veins in the epic tales surrounding Virginia City and the foundation of the St. Mary's Art Center. He has created an engaging site-specific installation.

As part of CCAI's Artists in Education program, Alston is also in residence at Carson High School. Born in Minnesota, Alston lives in Reno. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2007. Orphic Excavations will be on view through June 29.
