Economic development director named

Michael Skaggs, a public relations executive and former economic development executive from Albuquerque, has been named executive director of Nevada's Commission on Economic Development.

Gov. Jim Gibbons also appointed Luis Valera and Miranda Du as commissioners on that panel.

Skaggs has an extensive background as a consultant and advocate for regional development, most recently serving as vice president at DW Turner Public Relations in Arizona. He was also CEO at Next General Economy, Inc. and vice president at Albuquerque Economic Development.

"Mike Skaggs has left behind him a trail of economic development wherever he worked," Gibbons said in a statement announcing the appointment.

The governor said Skaggs has also done extensive consulting work in Nevada, including with the Nevada Economic Development Commission, Nevada Development Authority Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada and Reno-Tahoe Airport.

He will assume the office today.

Valera is currently the government relations director for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and a board member with the Latin Chamber of Commerce.

Du is currently a partner at the law firm of McDonald Carano Wilson, LLP. She received her law degree from the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley.

Their appointments take effect July 1.
