Bond-rating agencies residents of market's house of pain

We have all heard about subprime collateralized debt obligations by now. Every day the media talk about how these synthesized derivatives are at the heart of the credit crisis. As more homeowners default on mortgages, the values of these CDOs continue to decline like a fast-moving avalanche.

Unemployment hits hard in Carson City

Rebecca Lee loved working as an administrative assistant at a Carson City auto dealer, but two weeks after losing her job, she might have to look for work in another industry.

Unlikely duo join to create new city diner

The owners of Carson City Diner & Catering call themselves an unlikely duo. But as the pair banter back and forth like polished comics, it's clear that Tony Pastini - a former Chicago policeman, and Robert "Bobby" Genosa " the former executive chef for Dolce Enoteca e Restaurante at the Grand Sierra Resort " have come up with a recipe that works.

New sporting goods store says it can snag customers in slow economy

The slow economy has hurt many businesses in Nevada, but Jerry Bond said his new sporting goods store will be successful because he'll bring in products that customers want.

Better immigration laws needed Looking at Friday's paper (Nov. 14), we clearly see another fine example of the ill effects of the lack of enforcement of our immigration laws and the lawlessness of the illegal aliens in this country. Pictured there are three men clearly from south of the border that have been arrested for a rash of burglaries in Indian Hills.

Looking forward to leftovers

I've been getting some flack lately for not staying on message, to borrow a phrase from the presidential campaigns. "You're a southwestern restaurant so write about Mexican food." "The economy is in the tank so write about economical ways to feed the family." "It's Thanksgiving so write about turkey." OK, I'll try.

What is a 'nonprofit' casino?

I'm sure many of my readers understand business terminology much better than I do, so perhaps one or more of you can explain what is meant by the term "nonprofit" casino. Because, according to published reports, that's what the venerable Carson Nugget will become if a proposed sale goes through.

Don't believe every rumor you hear

The election is over and I should have written this months before, but there will be other elections and other situations where the same thought applies.

Musings following the 2008 presidential election

It still amazes me that Barack Obama " the most liberal member of the Senate, as well as the least qualified presidential candidate in history " was elected by a comfortable margin to be our 44th president, especially during such trying economic and political times.

Why not balance budget on the backs of state workers?

A recent letter-writer to the Nevada Appeal asked why Gov. Jim Gibbons was trying to "balance the budget shortfall on the backs of state workers." Heck, that's an easy one. It's the same reason Willie Sutton robbed banks. Because that's where the money is.

Carson City The following are some of the calls to which deputies responded Tuesday:

The 'evocative objects' of our lives

About six years ago both of my parents still were alive. It was July and I was back home in Michigan. Mother's lilies bloomed along the driveway and every time I got out of the car, I'd brush against them, disturbing them just enough to scatter yellow pollen onto my jeans. Their heavy, sweet scent " which I loved " inevitably also made me vaguely anxious. It took me back to my early childhood, back to the three-room apartment over Kresge's dimestore.

Let's be realistic about what Obama can accomplish

It seems to me that we should be very careful about holding out unreasonable expectations for President-elect Barack Obama, who will face seemingly intractable domestic and international problems when he takes office on Jan. 20.

Print both sides of stories An Appeal to the Appeal for Equity in Journalistic Reporting. Hopefully this hasn't become a cliche from the past, but I plead with the Nevada Appeal to carefully consider their responsibility to deliver fair journalistic reporting and to consider that a fairly strong percentage of their readers are starving to hear the issues from both sides.

Lyon County The following are some of the calls to which deputies responded Monday:

Where does the buck stop in Nevada?

If, on Friday, Gov. Gibbons seemed to be softening his stance on tax increases by saying "nothing is off the table," he tried to set the record straight on Monday. At least it sounded that way.

America will pay the bill for electing Obama In an Oct. 26 column, Guy Farmer endorsed Barack Obama for President. Seemingly apropos of nothing, Farmer also mentioned that his own children are mixed-race, just like Barack.

Why Obama gives me hope for the future

On the morning of Veteran's Day, I flew the American flag from the porch. For the past eight years, I have been reluctant to display the flag. It had come to symbolize support for the soon-to-be-past administration's corrupt, oppressive and self-serving domestic and foreign policies that many Americans and friends of America abhorred.

A vow to fight for veterans' benefits

Veterans Day is the day Americans honor our nation's heroes who defended liberty and gave their lives for freedom. I want to thank every veteran for their service to our country. As we all know, the people who make the greatest sacrifices for our country are the brave men and women of our Armed Forces. Generations of Nevadans will enjoy greater peace and security because of the tireless sacrifices of our service members.

A remembrance of a visit to the Wall My brother Gerald Rhoades wrote this letter to my mother, Ethelyn Rhoades, years ago and it still brings tears to my eyes remembering those who gave.

Carson City The following people were booked into the Carson City Jail. All suspects are innocent until proved guilty in court:

Kris Holt: Imagine if manufacturing declined in the capital region

Try this exercise to get a better sense of manufacturing's continuing importance to the capital region (Carson, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties). Imagine what would happen if this sector suddenly disappeared. Nearly 7,700 jobs would be lost. The region would immediately fall into a deep and long-lasting economic depression.

Redevelopment audit recommendations must prompt action

We sincerely hope there is no one in city government thinking that a recent critical audit of the city's Redevelopment Authority and Office of Business Development should be filed away on a shelf and forgotten.

Lisa Keating: 'How do we heal ourselves in a political world that doesn't want us to?'

Most of us are guilty: age jokes, racial slurs and sexist comments, even if we don't consider ourselves bigoted. As I reflect on the 2008 election and our current political climate, I find myself wondering what it is about this election that seems to have elicited these unbecoming behaviors from us in more public and extreme ways? I relied on social psychology, and my older relatives (Democrats, Republicans and an Independent) who have survived 70-plus years of politics, to shed some light on this topic.

Guy W. Farmer: Carson City polling locations were nearly problem-free

After promoting freedom and democracy in several different foreign countries during my diplomatic career, I decided to get involved in grassroots democracy when I returned home to Carson City 1996. Since then, I've learned a lot as a volunteer poll worker in seven local and national elections, most recently last Tuesday at the new Fuji Park Exhibit Hall. Perhaps you can teach an old dog new tricks.

Letters to the editor

Has confidence in new president I have been an independent voter for many years and have observed the ups and downs of many fine candidates representing the Democratic and Republican parties.

Veterans can find relief from stress on Tuesday

It might seem an unusual way to honor her nephew, who was killed in 2006 in a battle in Afghanistan, but to Maggie Tracey it makes perfect sense.

It's time for term limits The following is an old saying that has always been true but does not completely describe our current government.

Chuck Muth: Nevada Democrats have everything they need to raise taxes

There's an old saying about being careful what you wish for because you just might get it. And Nevada Democrats got just about everything they asked for on Tuesday.

Voters brought change to Carson City, too

Change came to the country like a thunderclap on Election Day, with the difference in electoral votes between President-elect Obama and Sen. McCain qualifying as a landslide victory.

Scary things in the kitchen

With Halloween just days away, our thoughts turn to scary things and places. Like your own kitchen. According to a study by British Esure Home Insurance, 10 percent of the population of the UK had accidents in the kitchen while trying to copy a celebrity chef.

Ice rink could be a good fit if the price is right

A skating rink for downtown Carson City? Our immediate reaction is that it's a great idea to not only generate more traffic downtown, but to create positive experiences for Carson residents of all ages. What a great place to spend a winter evening or weekend with your family without having to spend the money to travel.
