First 'Shop with a Cop' needs donations

The Lyon County Sheriff's office will be doing the county's first "Shop with a Cop" event, providing holiday assistance to children from underprivileged families and those who have been victims of crimes.

Deputy Julie Redmond is coordinating the effort and needs donations from Lyon County businesses which would be put 100 percent to this event. The shopping will take place at the new Wal-Mart in Fernley. Redmond said the goal is $100 per child for 10 children or more. Call 246-6200 or e-mail jredmond@lyon-county.org.

Christmas tree permits available in Carson

The Bureau of Land Management's Carson City office is offering Christmas tree cutting permits to harvest pinion pine trees from a specific area of the range. These are appropriate for resale as Christmas trees.

Businesses as well as nonprofit groups that need trees for fundraising may cut trees to sell in Christmas tree lots.

Trees are available for $5 each with no limit to the number that can be cut. Permits are available at the BLM's District Office in Carson City, 5665 Morgan Mill Road, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Fridays.

The area for cutting trees is 12 miles south of Dayton and 20 miles east of Carson City. Maps will be provided.

Gold Hill

Mark Twain's 173rd birthday celebrated

McAvoy Layne, performing as Mark Twain will be on hand at the Gold Hill Hotel at 7 p.m. today for a birthday party honoring the American humorist.

The event includes a four-course gourmet dinner, and cost $65 per person, plus tax and tip at the hotel, 1540 Main St., Gold Hill. Call 847-0111.

Christmas play to be performed by Gold Hill

The Gold Hill Theater Troupe will perform "The Toys Take Over Christmas," written and directed by Patricia Clapp and directed by Jan Parsons.

The play will be performed Nov. 19, Dec. 3, 10 and 17 at 7:30 p.m., and can include dinner. The play will take place at the Gold Hill Hotel.

The cost is $10 for both adults and children for the play only; for dinner and show the cost is $13 for adults and $8 for kids up to eighth grade. Call 847-0111.

Community soup dinners at schoolhouse set

Friday evening Soup Dinner Gatherings will take place at the Silver City Schoolhouse at 6 p.m. Nov. 21, Dec. 5 and 19.

The Silver City Task Force is providing the soup base and meats, and residents are encouraged to bring other soup ingredients like vegetables, herbs and spices.

Community members are encouraged to participate in the soup and homemade bread preparation before settling in to watch a film or browse the library collection. If you have film suggestions call Quest Lakes at 287-7598.

Task force to meet

The Silver City Task Force will meet at 6 p.m. Nov. 24 for dinner and discussion on building a healthy community, at the Silver City Schoolhouse.

Upcoming plans include new youth-in-service community projects, an art contest, winter art classes and movie-dinner nights. Call Quest Lakes at 246-7550.

Food drive taking place

The Silver Stage Middle School student council is conducting a canned food drive through Nov. 20.

Anyone interested in donating items should call 577-5050. Donations will be picked up.

Fire station opening planned for Sunday

The Central Lyon County Fire Protection District will hold a grand opening of its new fire station at Deodar Street and Spruce Avenue at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The $1.7 million facility is on a 4.35-acre lot and is equipped with energy-efficient, solar-assisted heating system, a kitchen, offices, showers, watch room and living quarters.

The new fire station will be staffed by community volunteer firefighters, who are also seeking new members. Call 246-6209.

5th Annual SSHS Bingo Night today

The 5th Annual Silver Stage High School's Bingo Night is today at the school, 3755 West Spruce St., Silver Springs.

The doors open at 6 p.m. and the first game starting at 6:30 p.m. Bingo cards are: Adults, $3 each or four for $10; Seniors, $5 for three cards; and children, $2 each or three for $5.

'The Sunshine Boys' to be performed

The Gold Hill Theater Troupe will perform Neil Simon's "The Sunshine Boys," in a dinner show starring and directed by Richard J. McGregor, at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays through Dec. 18 at Piper's Opera House, 12 North B St., Virginia City.

The play is about a couple of vaudeville actors in New York who reunite for a special broadcast performance.

Cowboys Christmas show at Piper's

David John and the Comstock Cowboys will perform their annual "Christmas in the Sierra" production at Piper's Opera House for two shows, 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 29.

The band mixes Christmas songs cowboy-style with holiday originals and traditional carols. Santa will be on hand for the children.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors (55+) and veterans, and $12 for children younger than 12. Call 847-4768.

Christmas Parade of Lights set

Floats, marching groups and equestrians will be decorated for the annual Christmas on the Comstock Parade of Lights down C Street on Dec. 6.

The parade will begin at 5 p.m., with registration and lineup beginning at 4 p.m., at the Historic Fourth Ward School at the south end of town.

The parade, the kick off to Virginia City's annual month-long Christmas on the Comstock festival, will feature Beauregard, the car-driving dog, the Sierra Pacific Hot Stix drill team, many floats lit up for the season and Santa Claus. Ribbons will be awarded to the best entries and late entries are welcome.
