The Carson Senators boys soccer team took control early to win the showdown between the Sierra League's top two teams.

Izzy Lopez and Adam Updegrove scored in the first 25 minutes and the Senators made those goals stand up in a 2-0 win at Manogue High School on Saturday. Carson moved into sole possession of first in league at 6-1-1 while Manogue fell to 5-2-1. The Senators also own the tiebreaker over the Miners as they swept both league meetings against Manogue.

"A huge win for us," Carson coach Nate Brigham said. "They boys played very well. This is a huge momentum boost for the boys starting the second half of the season."

Brigham said he was happy with how his team stayed with the gameplan.

"The boys executed it very well," he said.

Cyrill Suto also assisted on one of the goals. Once Carson got up 2-0, the Senators went into defensive mode and only allowed a couple of shots in the second half.

"Once we put two goals in we played very defensive," Brigham said.

Carson also got what it expected on Manogue's small field " a physical game.

"It was an extremely physical game," Brigham said. "We knew that coming in."

Goalie Brandon Briggs and defenders Luis Aguiar, Brian Duran, Jorge Guevara and Nate Eng posted the shutout for Carson. Briggs was able to preserve the shutout with a couple of nice saves in the first half.

"He had a couple very good saves to keep the shutout," Brigham said.

Blake Moreland also played well up front and John Nuthall played well at midfield for the Senators.

Next up for Carson is another key league showdown against Wooster at 7 p.m. Wednesday at CHS. The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie at Wooster in their first meeting. Wooster will also have momentum going into Wednesday's showdown as it will be coming off a 3-2 win on Saturday against the Vikings at South Tahoe.

MANOGUE 3, CARSON GIRLS 0

Carson continued to struggle as it lost its third straight league game to fall to 4-4 in league. The Senators missed goalie Jen Johnson, who was out with an injury and Manogue took advantage by scoring three early goals. In the two teams' first meeting, Carson beat the Miners 7-1.

Kate Schulz came on to play at goal for Carson and was able to settle things down. "She really did phenomenal," Carson coach Randy Roser said.

Carson also went with just three defenders in an effort to mount a comeback and Ashley Turner, Emily Field and Lauren Schulz also played well under the circumstances.

But Carson received more bad news when Field had to come out of the game with a knee injury. Roser said the severity of the injury is unknown. He added he hopes to have Johnson back at goal for Tuesday's game against Wooster to be played at 7 p.m. at CHS.

Led by Brandi Vega and Taylor Musselman, Carson was able to put pressure on Manogue but couldn't break through.

"We were all over them," Roser said. "We just couldn't get them in the net. They would not give us a shot on goal."

NOTE: Vega came into Saturday's game having already broken the school career record for assists and is on the verge of breaking the school career record for goals as well. She has 55 assists, breaking the record of 53 and has 50 goals. The record is 56.

GALENA 2, DOUGLAS BOYS 1

The Tigers scored in the first five minutes on a beautiful goal to take the lead, but the Grizzlies took advantage of two defensive lapses to come back for the win at Galena.

Ross Gardner sent an outstanding cross to Andrew Andraski, who headed it in for Douglas. Corbin Zumpft made five "quality" saves, said Douglas coach Milko Vasquez and Brian Randall, Edgar Gonzalez and Edgar Arceo all played well for the Tigers.

"I'm very proud of them," said Vasquez, commenting on his team's effort.

DAMONTE RANCH GIRLS 1, FALLON 0

Brenna McMahon scored on an assist from Ciara O'Driscoll to give Damonte the win. Damonte outshot Fallon 17-8. Goalie Lauren Delameter, Gianna Whitney, Bailey Torrez, Kyleigh Larson and Rachel Viette combined on the shutout.

CHS JV GIRLS 4, MANOGUE 1

Eva Arraz scored on an assist by Kaitlin Cosens, Janet Butler scored on an assist from Alex Schlager, Arrin Rumbaugh scored on an assist from Schlager and Arraz scored n an assist from Brenda Torres for Carson. Brittany Medina posted the win at goalie for CHS.

CARSON JV BOYS 5, MANOGUE 0

Luis Camacho scored two goals and added two assists as the Senators improved to 7-0-1 in league and 9-0-1 overall. David Yanez, who had one assist, and Mark Lacy combined in goal for the shutout.

Pedro Chavez, Gustavo Gonzalez and Chris Espinoza each scored a goal and Carlos Munoz and Drew Moreland each had an assist for the Senators.
