With one state record already under her belt, Brandi Vega moved closer to another state record as the Carson High girls soccer team got a much needed 6-0 win over Wooster on Tuesday at the CHS football field.
Vega scored three goals to give her 53 career goals, moving her closer to the record of 56. Vega also padded her own state career record for assists as she added an assist to give her 56 for her career.
Vega opened the scoring in the first 25 seconds of the game, scoring on an assist from Taylor Musselman. Natalie Stevens then scored on an assist from Vega and Vega scored on a breakaway to give Carson a 3-0 halftime lead.
Helaine Berris scored on an assist from Miriah Tompkins and Vega and Krystina Kane added goals in the second half for Carson. Kate Schulz went virtually unchallenged in the goal to post the shutout.
MCQUEEN 11, CHS BOYS TENNIS 7
The Carson High boys tennis season came to an end in the first round of the Northern 4A playoffs on Tuesday as the Senators couldn't overcome one of the North's best singles players, Joey Saarem, and a tough Lancer doubles lineup.
McQueen was able to turn around a 10-8 loss against Carson earlier in the season by winning eight of nine doubles matces and Saarem also swept his matches. The difference of the match came when the Lancers were able to win several close matches.
Saarem was able to turn around the result against Carson's Spencer Brinson in a battle of two of the North's top players. Brinson beat Saarem in the first meeting, but Saarem won on Tuesday 6-2.
Carson was able to win six of nine singles matches as Brinson won 6-0, 6-0, Adam Whitt won 6-2, 6-3 and Gordon Lee won 6-3, 6-2,
The Senators lost several close doubles matches as Jordan Rogers and Tyler Simms lost two close matches, 4-6, 5-7. Matt McDaniel and Thomas Hollenbeck-Pringle also lost 4-6 and Ricky Nugyen and Jon Kane lost 5-7 for Carson. Rogers and Simms picked up Carson's only win in doubles 6-2.
CHS GIRLS GOLF
The Carson High girls golf team was just edged out of qualifying for next week's Northern 4A Tournament in Elko. The four teams to qualify were first place Douglas, second place Manogue, third place Galena and fourth place Damonte Ranch. Carson was in a three-way battled with Galena and Damonte for the last two spots and was just edged out.
"We just got beat," Carson coach Terry Gingell said. "We just got nipped in the bud. It was a very, very tight race."
The Senators turned in a solid effort on Tuesday in the final regular season Sierra League event hosted by Fallon, but it was just not enough. Chelsea Keating had her second straight round in the 80s as she fired an 84 and Julia Lapham shot a career best 86 for Carson.
Also for the Senators, Julia Lapham shot a 96, Katie Cowperthwaite had a 98, Whitney Nash fired a 100 and Lindsay Burroughs and Elayna Shine each fired a 102. "We actually had a pretty good day," Gingell said. "The girls played well."
Carson will have three individuals at next week's zone event: Keating, Cowperthwaite and Nash.
GALENA GIRLS TENNIS 14, SPANISH SPRINGS 4
Galena rolled into Thursday's Northern 4A semifinals when the Grizzlies will play McQueen.
In singles, Mica Olson won 6-1, 6-1, Hailey Llop won 6-2, 6-1, Hannah Llop won 6-4, 6-0 and Natasha Monga won 6-2 for Galena. In doubles, Lindy Deller and Addie Potter won 6-0, 6-2, Emily McClintock and Leann Roggensack won 6-1, 6-0, 6-3, Alex Darling and Ellen Ferguson won 6-0 and Courtney Morse and Cathryn Hansen won 6-2 for the Grizzlies.
MANOGUE 3, GALENA VOLLEYBALL 1
Galena (11-13, 3-5) fell to Manogue 25-21, 7-25, 19-25, 22-25. Emily Aguiar had 10 kills and 12 blocks, Brooke Keever had seven kills, 11 digs and six blocks, Kim Naut and Casey Burke each had four kills, Bree Crook had 24 assists and 10 digs and Danica Vigni had 13 digs for Galena.
Galena won the freshmen match 25-23, 19-25, 18-16 and Manogue won the junior varsity match 25-23, 25-23.
CHS JV SOCCER 7, WOOSTER 0
Arrin Rumbaugh scored on an assist from Katie McFarren, McFarren scored on an assist from Eva Arraz, Janet Butler scored on an assist from Alex Schlager, Rumbaugh scored on an assist from Schlager, Monica Chavez scored on an assist from Arraz and Chavez and Eliza Matley each scored for Carson.
CHS FROSH VOLLEYBALL 2, DOUGLAS 0
Coming off winning the Galena Tournament title, Carson's freshmen (8-0 in league) beat Douglas 25-16, 25-22.
Sarah Lushina had 11 assists and two aces, Erin Bailey had two digs and one ace, Allison Christl and Angela Augusta each had two kills, Tiana McAllister-Daggs had three kills and three aces, Kristalee Wolfe had six assists and two kills, Allison Vondrak had one kill, Laura Mohlenkamp had three kills and two aces, Kahlia Pimental had one dig and Elena Charles added two digs for Carson.
BASKETBALL WORKOUTS
Two former area standouts, Mike Atkinson and Alex Gamboa will be presenting a series of basketball workouts.
The eight-week preseason package will be offered from October 12 through December 4. There will be three sessions per week with a total of 24 workouts. Those in grades four through 12 are eligible.
Cost is $150 per four weeks or those who just drop in can pay $25 per session. The sessions are limited to 25 participants. Private workouts can be scheduled by appointment.
The sessions will be held at the David Wood Basketball Facility, 20205 South Virginia Street. Sessions will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sundays, 5 to 6:30 p.m. and 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays.
Atkinson was an all-state standout at Galena and is an A.C.E. certified personal trainer. He played professionally with the IBL's Chico Force and with the New York Nationals, the opponent of the Harlem Globetrotters.
Gamboa, a Reno High graduate, was a four-year starter for Yale, the Ivy League Freshman of the Year, team captain at Yale and an all-Ivy league honorable mention choice.

HOLE-IN-ONE
Dick Sprague of Dayton recently shot a hole-in-one at the Eagle Valley East Course. Sprague used a 6-iron from the white tee on the 17th hole to fire his second ace. Marty DeWitt and Al Deshaw witnessed the ace.
YOUTH BASKETBALL
Registration for the Carson City Recreation Division's youth basketball league is now being held.
Signups are being accepted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through October 17 at the Carson City Community Center office. Girls and boys in grades three through eight are eligible.
Cost is $55 for one child, $100 for two children in the same family and $140 for three children in the same family.
