Inside the Fallon Crafters Corral, it's a craft fair all year long.
Jenna Richardson, manager and daughter of owner Karen Spriggs, said her mother owned a similar crafters store in the Modesto, Calif., area in the mid-1990s and did so well she opened a second store within three months.
The family moved to Nevada in 1999 and settled in Gardnerville. They subsequently moved to Reno and relocated in Fallon last summer. The new store opened in July, and business has been steady, Richardson said.
The store rents booth spaces to various local crafters who display their handmade items and other ware for sale.
The Spriggs family has two booths themselves, which helps with their personal profit, because the booth rentals from crafters is only used to pay the building rental.
Richardson said items crafters bring in are tagged with the crafter's number and a sale price. The sales, handled by the store, are tracked, and crafters receive their money on an agreed-upon schedule.
The store receives a good deal of foot traffic, Richardson said, from people window shopping on Maine Street or from people waiting for a movie to begin. Farmers Market brought many customers through their doors, Richardson said, and it took three employees to keep up with customer demand.
"It was fun," Richardson said of the farmers market season. "I met so many interesting people."
The inventory is constantly changing depending on how the crafters stock their booths, but some of the items available include cowgirl aprons made from adorned jeans, crocheted blankets, custom gift baskets featuring food, coffee or bath items, rustic birdhouses, tole painting, jewelry and Christmas ornaments.
There are also decorated gourds, calendar quilts and soft books, hats and purses from Ecuador, decorated paint cans, origami and crocheted bead work wrapped around glass jars.
Prices, of course, vary from booth to booth, but there is something available for all budgets at Fallon Crafters Corral.
"This kind of store is way overdue for Fallon," said Terri Barton, a prospective crafter, who said the store is a good outlet for crafters struck by the creative spirit.
