The Western Nevada College baseball team rolled to a 12-3 win at Modesto Junior College in California on Friday.
In the 10-inning scrimmage, WNC led 10-0 after five innings, 12-0 after seven innings and led 12-0 going into the 10th inning. "We probably played our best game of the fall," WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said.
Lance Ray went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run, Eric Maupin was 1-for-3, Jerome Pena went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs, Brett Moravec was 2-for-6 with two RBI, three runs and a double, Kevin Meyers doubled with two RBI and a run, Brett Wellman tripled with an RBI and two runs and Mike Stile added a hit, two RBI and a run for WNC.
On the mound, Cavin Hill started and worked his way out of trouble in the first two innings. After allowing a leadoff single in the first, he picked the runner off and then after walking two batters, worked out of the jam.
In the second with runners and first and second and no outs, Hill threw out a runner at third on a sacrifice bunt attempt and then induced an inning-ending double play. Hill struck out two and allowed one hit.
Javy Perez came on to strike out two and allow one hit over two innings. "Javy pitched two outstanding innings," Whittemore said.
Josh Moody allowed two hits while striking out two over two innings. "Moody was excellent," Whittemore said.
Jake Waardenburg retired all six batters he faced as WNC held Modesto to four hits through nine innings.
Kevin Rogers pitched a scoreless ninth and retired the first two batters in the 10th before running into trouble as he ended up allowing three runs, two earned.
Wildcat batters also only struck out four times in 10 innings. "There was a lot of productive outs and we did a good job running the bases and we got got the ball in play," Whittemore said.
WNC will conclude its fall scrimmage season today with a doubleader at Modesto, beginning at 10 a.m.
