A Carson City pilot was killed Thursday morning while trying to make an emergency landing near Woodfords when his Piper Cherokee aircraft crashed about two miles from the Alpine County Airport.
Raymond Wieveg, 53, radioed that he had engine failure and was in distress shortly before 11 a.m., according to Alpine County Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Michitarian.
Wieveg apparently was trying to make it to the Alpine County Airport but went down in some trees on land belonging to the South Tahoe Public Utility District.
A district employee spotted the aircraft on its top and contacted authorities.
Alpine and Douglas medical personnel responded.
It appears that Wieveg, a software development engineer who owned a business in Carson City, was the lone occupant of the aircraft.
An investigation into the accident is being conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
