When the Leather & Lace M.C. Nomads organized a fundraiser, it wasn't difficult to find an organization to benefit from their efforts.
On Saturday, the group is hosting a poker run for cancer awareness, which will benefit Carson Advocates for Cancer Care and Renown Health Foundation. Funds will be used to purchase wigs and protheses for breast cancer patients as well as provide general financial assistance to defray the cost of prescriptions, treatment and related care.
"There are a lot of breast cancer cases in our area," said organizer Robin Gouty. "Our poker run will help women in this area.
"A lot of insurance doesn't pay for prosthetics because they're considered cosmetic."
The day's events begin at 9 a.m. with registration and a biscuit and gravy breakfast by Mustang Sallie. The run starts and ends at Cactus Jacks Casino.
Gouty said the community can help by participating in the run " motorcycle not required. There will also be craft booths and other vendors, a chili cook-off and a "hunk-a-thon."
"This is for men in tight jeans," Gouty said. Entrants must be at least 18 years old. Entry fee is $10 and voting will be done by the women.
Entry fee for the poker run is $15. The chili cook-off entry is $20, the fee to have a craft table or other vending is also $20. The first 150 poker run entries will receive a pin.
Live music will be performed by Kevin and Jeff, a raffle and 50/50 drawing will also be held " winner need not be present to win. Tickets are $1 each, 6 for $5 or 12 for $10.
Entry forms for all contests are available at www.eventsnevada.com. For information on crafters or the chili cook-off, call Fred Nietz at 887-1294; for poker run information call Gouty after 7 p.m. at 351-3847.
The chili cook-off is for amateurs and is a "no-holds barred" competition. All varieties of chili are encouraged.
Carson Advocates for Cancer Care is a nonprofit group that helps with expenses and medications for cancer patients.
"It's important everyone knows about cancer and how much there is in our community," Gouty said. "Every day, there's someone who is related to someone with cancer. We hope we can help out more.
