Carson City ClerkRecorder Alan Glover says he expects fully half those registered to vote this year to do so during early voting.

Early voting begins today and runs through Oct. 31. The election is Nov. 4.

And Glover said he is predicting one of the highest turnouts in decades " from 87 to 90 percent of those registered.

"We had 88 percent four years ago, so it could even be a little bit higher," he said.

He also said the Democratic Party has made significant gains this election cycle, adding 543 voters to the Carson City rolls while the GOP lost 1,709 voters.

Republicans still lead, however, with 11,218 registered to 9,408 Democrats.

But, Glover said, total registration has actually fallen since 2004 from 26,367 to 25,374 " a drop of 993 voters.

The Carson City Courthouse will open for voters at 10 a.m.
