SOUTH LAKE TAHOE " After 160 minutes, South Tahoe and Douglas still don't know which school has the better girls soccer team.
The Vikings' Cassandra Diaz converted a penalty kick in the 70th minute as South Tahoe salvaged a 1-1 Sierra League tie with the Tigers on Saturday at the Community Youth Sports Complex. The two teams also battled to a 1-1 tie earlier this season in Minden.
"No matter what, these games are always intense because, not only is Douglas a good team, it's a rivlary game," said South Tahoe coach Clint Lockhhart. "I am not disappointed with the tie, but I am disappointed with the way we came out. We didn't come out hard. They definitely outplayed us in the first half."
In the seventh minute, Douglas' Tia Lyons scored to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way for the next 60 minutes, though Douglas had to hold off several South Tahoe attacks in the second half.
"We knew it was going to be a tough game for us, and we went into it knowing we'd have to keep our defensive posture," said Douglas coach Lorraine Fitzhugh. "We're such a young team and I still feel we're gelling."
With the tie, Douglas remains in the first place in the league standings with at 9-1-2 (29 points). The Vikings are second at 8-0-4 (28 points). Both teams have two games remaining in the regular season, including dates with Carson next week.
"For me, because I know anything can happen in zone, it doesn't matter if we are the No. 1 or the No. 2 (seed) because all the games are tough," Fitzhugh said. "But I'd like to get the regular season title for the girls' confidence."
SOUTH TAHOE 2, DOUGLAS BOYS 1
It was another frustrating loss for Douglas as South Tahoe scored off of a corner kick in the final minute for the win. The Vikings' other goal came off of a penalty kick and other than that South Tahoe never really threatened.
Douglas (10-10-1, 4-7-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game when Edgar Arceo scored off of a pass from Ross Gardner.
DAMONTE RANCH GIRLS 3, MANOGUE 1
Kaleina Pibulvech scored twice and Lilla Melton scored the other goal for Damonte Ranch (5-9, 4-8).
