Youth football: Mitey Mite Blue rolls to win

The Carson Senator Mitey Mite Blue youth football team rolled over the Sparks Wolf Pack 41-21 on Friday.

The scoring began early as Brandon Gagnon scored the first of his three touchdowns by taking the opening kickoff in for a 7-0 lead for the Senators. Conner Larkin scored Carson's second touchdown after the defense held to make the score 14-0.

Carson's offensive line was outstanding. Nick Tibma, Sam Wilson, Dawson Lamb, Wesley Strickler, Justin Lopez and Tristan Martel opened holes for Larkin, Gagnon, Nick Andreas, Derek Schafer, Jarod Butler and Reed Lequerica all night long.

Sparks scored on a long run to make the score 14-7. Gagnon scored and Schafer added another extra point to make it 21-7 but the Wolf Pack took the ensuing kickoff in for a score to make it 21-14. Schafer scored and made the extra point to go up 28-14 but again the Wolf Pack answered before the half to make the score 28-21.

Carson's defense stiffened in the second half behind Gavin Bakkehahl, Adam Larkin, Carl Cavner, Phillip Lopez, Andreas, Larkin, Gagnon, Luke Myers, Butler, Daniel Morrison, Skyler Duncan, Jordan Warren and Brandon Basa. Andreas added a touchdown in the third quarter to give the Senators a 34-21 lead.

Gagnon scored his third touchdown of the night to make the final 41-21. Dawson Breuer and Landon Truesdale split time at wide receiver and helped pave the way to Carson's running game.

Carson takes on the Sparks Steelers this Friday at 6 p.m. at Governors Field. The Senators improved to 4-2-1 on the season.

TINY MITES BLUE WINS

The Carson Senators Tiny Mites Blue football team won the shootout against the Douglas Tigers Black squad 48-42 on Friday in Douglas. This was a game in which the last defensive stop by the Senators proved to be the difference.

After Douglas scored on its opening possession, Carson scored on its third play from scrimmage as Colton Schafer ran the ball up the middle and scored the first of his seven touchdowns on the night. Schafer amassed nearly 350 yards rushing on 10 carries.

The Senator coaching staff agreed that Schafer's performance was one of the greatest running spectacles they've ever witnessed. Linemen Malak Kangas and Gabriel Tatro played their best game to date. Center Dean Poppenga III and lineman Kevin Tooke and Cody Neal also played well. Wideouts Chance Sanders, Braxton Carter and Paul Honein made all of their blocks and performed admirably on their assigned stunts.

Honein had a nice 20-yard carry in the first half on an end around. dam Fenton was excellent throughout the game running strong up the middle and outside. Fenton scored for the Senators late in the game from the 4-yard line after he had run it 50 yards on the previous carry. Quarterback Jacob Sorber also played well.

Defensively, Connor McCleary was outstanding all night. He saved touchdowns on the last play of the first half and the last play of the game. Sasha Keith-Handschuh, Garrett Tibma, Garrett Wilson split time at safety and defensive line, Honein and Brandon Mendoza also all played well defensively.

The Tiny Mites Blue finished the regular season at 5-2. The Tiny Mites Blue will have one final game at 6 p.m. this Friday at Reno's Mira Loma Park against the Reno Ravens Purple.
