What would a business-friendly city do?

The next time you're out shopping or dining, we encourage you to take a moment and chat with the owner or manager. Ask them how their business is doing.

Abby Johnson: A thriving library is the heart of a healthy community.

In Carson City, our public library is a community center: a gathering place for youth, families, the retired and civic groups; a cool spot to read on a hot summer's day; an open door to the Internet's information and opportunity; and an affordable (free!) source of books, music and movies.

Time is money: Deciding when to take Social Security

One of the few things you can control about Social Security is when to start collecting it. Should you take it when you become eligible at age 62, wait until "normal" retirement age (a function of your birth date) or consider delaying your benefits past normal retirement age?

V&T Cooperation amounts to wishful thinking

As the Appeal reported again this week, Carson City is the only local entity involved with the V&T Railway project that's paying its fair share. The others are thumbing their noses at the law creating the project that dictates, broadly, that each entity should contribute according to how much benefit it will receive.

Elizabeth Reville: Homeless Connect event brought hope to many low income residents

The annual Homeless Connect, sponsored by Carson City Health and Human Services, was held on Sept. 20. Organized by Kathy Wolfe, Administrative Services Officer and Frances Ashley, case manager, this well-coordinated event is a hand up, not a handout for Carson City's homeless and low income residents.

Fred Kessler: Who will rescue the taxpayers from the Neo-Cons?

The other day I saw a bearded homeless man in tattered clothing standing by the side of the road with a shopping cart and sign that read "Will Develop Real Estate for Food," which accurately describes the current state of the U.S. housing industry.

Guy W. Farmer: Petraeus has set the stage for an honorable exit from Iraq

As Gen. David Petraeus departed Iraq late last month, he made a number of interesting comments about the war, but he didn't claim victory. And that was important because premature declarations of victory " think "Mission Accomplished!" " make soldiers and politicians look silly later on. Gen. Petraeus has learned this vital political/military lesson; President Bush hasn't.

Chuck Muth: Why Loux and the Nuclear Waste Office should leave together

Bob Loux, executive director of the Nuclear Waste Project Office (NWPO), was recently caught with his sticky little fingers in the cookie jar. Turns out the man has been giving himself a lot more in pay raises than anyone knew about or approved. This isn't an unsubstantiated allegation, mind you. Loux admitted to this malfeasance in office on Sept. 9 at a meeting of the Interim Finance Committee where he asked the Legislature to cover a half-million dollar shortfall in his budget due to his actions.

School uniforms? Worth a look, but they may not help with gang problem

The discussion about instituting school uniforms is yet another sign that people are rising up to do something about the gang problem. The graffiti scrawled nightly around town belies the efforts of many people who are determined to make a stand before it's too late. Crews are out every week painting over the graffiti, and groups of community leaders are doing what they can to solve the problem, including establishing a Secret Witness program.

Nevada's longtime Nuclear Projects Chief, Bob Loux, should resign in order to divert the media spotlight away from him and focus it back where it belongs, squarely on the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump.

Group holds an ambitious goal " to end poverty in Carson City

It's interesting that in this political season you don't hear any candidates promising to stamp out poverty. Maybe they know the problem is too large, that no one would believe them.

Chuck Muth: How now Cheryl Lau

In a rather embarrassing letter-to-the-editor published by the Nevada Appeal recently, former Nevada school chief, public education apologist, and northern Nevada's leading leftist Eugene Paslov blubbered that promising voters not to raise their taxes was "irresponsible" and anyone who signs the Taxpayer Protection Pledge "should be voted out of office."

Unauthorized pay raise or not, Yucca still poses serious safety issues

It's clear that Bob Loux is guilty of, at a minimum, poor judgment in granting himself and other staff members in the Nuclear Projects Office raises above the level authorized by the state.

Marilee Swirczek: Sarah may be nice, but her views don't seem so friendly

Sarah Palin might be a nice person, but we couldn't be friends. Why? I have faith in scientific inquiry; Palin seems unwilling to consider evidence that human activities contribute to global warming.

Armory site is too important to sit idle

It's probably a good thing that the old National Guard armory building is being torn down " the buildings on the site have been deteriorating since 2002 in a very visible location.

Dirk Zahtilla: The Airport Authority works, so why does Bob Thomas want to change it?

Perhaps Bob Thomas is a bit confused. He states that creating the airport authority removes all responsibility for running the airport from Carson City. He does not state, however, that every decision made by the Airport Authority must be approved by the City Council. So, while the Airport Authority has the responsibility, they have no authority to make any final decisions as to leases, airport operations, and airport regulations, etc.

Sheriff's log

Sheriff's Log Carson City The following people were booked into the Carson City Jail. All suspects are innocent until proved guilty in court:

We need less government and people who work harder

In response to the column written by David Bushey on Sept. 7, yes I am a man of great faith, I believe God will lead us through the troubled days ahead and I also believe that the majority of Americans believe the way I do. We can and will overcome the chains of a far reaching liberal government that will, if left uncontrolled, make us slaves in our own homes.

Mark and Jenny Lopiccolo: Taking funds from redevelopment is shortsighted

Robin Williamson published an opinion column on Sunday, Sept. 7, regarding the recent 3-2 vote by our Board of Supervisors to essentially steal the accumulated funds generated over years by Downtown Redevelopment. In Supervisor Williamson's words, "The three men on the Carson City Board of Supervisors hit the Redevelopment Authority with a gut punch."

Mayor Marv Teixeira: Proposal passed fairly; redevelopment should work on its own revenue stream

I am doing something that I have never done in the almost 12 years that I have had the privilege of serving as mayor of this fine community. I am responding to a commentary in the newspaper. The commentary, written by Supervisor Robin Williamson, was published in last Sunday's edition.

Bob Thomas: Making a case that Carson no longer needs an Airport Authority

It's ironic that I, as the originator of the Carson City Airport Authority in 1989, am now calling for its abolition. It has served its purpose. It has outlived its usefulness. Why? Because things are far different today than in 1988.

Wind farm proposal has too much potential to dismiss

There's an irony at play in the proposal for a wind turbine farm in the mountains north of Carson City and west of Virginia City. Those turbines, which could power more than 43,000 homes, represent the potential start of a virtual gold rush for Nevada, which we keep hearing has more clean energy potential than any other state.

David Bushey: Old ideologies and blind faith won't fix our problems

Mr. David, Nevada Appeal's Aug. 8 guest columnist, is a man of great faith. He must be, because he has complete devotion in the idea of free market fixing all of America's woes. It doesn't matter that lack of regulation allowed the Enron fiasco, nor does the nigh collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mae conflict with his world view. If we simply cut enough taxes and regulation then everything will be fine. Repeat ad nausem.

Robin Williamson: Mayor's plan leaves downtown efforts dead in the water

This week, the three men on the Carson City Board of Supervisors hit the Redevelopment Authority with a gut punch. They voted, en bloc, to require the meager Downtown Redevelopment budget to repay the $2 million used from landfill proceeds to stimulate the redevelopment of the aging, empty Wal-Mart building in the new South Carson Redevelopment district.

Guy W. Farmer: Palin has gotten the attention of this undecided voter

Republican presidential candidate John McCain launched the political equivalent of a "Hail Mary" pass when he selected little known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate. The Republican "base" reacted enthusiastically to the Arizona senator's surprise choice while left-wing bloggers unleashed an electronic blizzard of scurrilous personal attacks against Gov. Palin and her all-American family.

Chuck Muth: A pit bull in lipstick guts The Chosen One

Wow. Before Sarah Palin rocked the house with her coming-out speech Wednesday night, many Republicans were worried about her "qualifications" and the prospect of her being "just a heartbeat away" from the presidency. But after the speech many of those same Republicans " and I recognize this is a bit macabre " were simply ecstatic that she might be just a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Lorie Smith Schaefer: A voter who likes the idea of change

For two weeks, I watched the Olympics, in which hard work, dedication and sacrifice were rewarded. Then I watched the Democratic National Convention as Sen. Barack Obama's life story unfolded and his plans for the future were put forth. Again, I heard the themes of hard work, dedication and sacrifice emphasized. I was inspired. He and Joe Biden share my values, my priorities. Family. Personal responsibility. A promise to leave the world a better place than we found it. Hope.
