Carson freshmen football picks up win vs. McQueen

Carson boys tennis coach Kevin Fallon's theory is just to stay out of the way and let his players keep executing what they're doing.

"These guys are really working hard," said Fallon after his team improved to 2-0 and won its Sierra League opener 12-6 against Wooster on Thursday at CHS. "They're exceptional people.

"The only thing I want to do is not get in their way. I'm really very happy with what they're doing."

After what amounted to two tuneup matches, Carson will face its first real test of the season on Tuesday when it travels to Manogue for a Sierra League match.

Carson warmed up for the showdown by winning the all six sets against Wooster in the first round, losing just one game.

Spencer Brinson, Gordon Lee and Adam Whitt all won 6-0 in singles and Tyler Simms and Jordan Rogers and Jon Kane and Ricky Nguyen won 6-0. J.J. Aragon and Dom Mariani won 67-1.

Also for Carson in singles, Matt McDaniel won 6-1, Blake Sly won 6-3, Thomas Hollenbeck-Pringle won 6-1 and Adam Whitt won his other match 6-2. Smith and Rogers won their other match 6-1.

The match ended with an entertaining set in singles in which Lee eventually fell 13-11 in a tiebreaker, losing 6-7. Lee had five match points, three when leading 6-5, and two in the tiebreaker, before falling.

He also came back from down 40-15 to break serve to take a 6-5 lead and saved three match points in the tiebreaker. He also overcame a 1-5 deficit in the tiebreaker.

CARSON GIRLS TENNIS 13, WOOSTER 5

Carson (2-0) also warmed up for a key league showdown with Manogue at CHS on Tuesday with a win at Wooster. "They're doing a great job," said Carson coach Linda Hixenbaugh about her team.

In singles, Tiffany Moore won 7-6, 6-0, Sarah Shores won 6-1 and Kristin Howard won 6-2.

In doubles, Elise Hansen and Hannah Dudley won 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, Alyssa Corda and Hannah Shaw won 6-0, 6-2, Allie Collier and Bridgett Huish won 6-0, 6-0, Danielle Moffit and Kendall Dossey won 6-1 and Alyse Austin and Maryanne Ong won 7-6 as Carson swept all nine doubles matches.

"That should be a good match, looking forward to it," said Hixenbaugh about Manogue.

CHS VOLLEYBALL3, MCQUEEN 0

Carson rolled to a surprisingly easy 25-12, 25-8, 25-12 win at McQueen. "We played well and they did not," Carson coach Justin Malley said.

"It was a bad combination for them. They definitely did not play as well as they're capable of playing. They're a much better team."

Shannon Earwood had 26 assists and four kills, Mavil Diaz had 16 digs and three aces, Kailey Taylor had three kills and three blocks and Blaike King had nine kills, seven digs and two aces for Carson.

DOUGLAS VOLLEYBALL 3, RENO HIGH 2

Douglas improved to 10-0 with a hard fought 25-14, 19-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-9 win at Reno.

Shannon Dugan had 14 kills, one point and seven blocks, Jessica Waggoner had nine kills, three points and nine blocks, Jourdan Burke had eight kills, five points, one dig, one ace and two blocks Taryn Williams had seven kills, 13 points and six digs, Megan Mitchell had six kills, 36 assists, four blocks, one dig, two aces and 19 points, Jamie Lorntzen had one kill and seven blocks, Bryanna Schinzing had four blocks, Mysta Townsell had 15 digs and four points, Rebecca Antti had two aces and three points, Mia Townsell had one point and Christine DuPuis added one kill and three blocks for Douglas.

GALENA BOYS TENNIS 13, DOUGLAS 5

Mario Casci and Steven Day swept both of their doubles matches, winning 6-3, 6-1 to help lead Galena to the win.

In singles, Shane Leeder won twice 6-0, 6-1 and Jeremy Grubbs won 6-0. Also in doubles for Galena, Joseph Prescott and Kyle Karrach swept all three of their matches, winning 6-0, 6-2, 6-2.

Niklaus Potter and Connor Bradley won 7-5 and Tyson Wright and Don Maland won 6-3 in doubles as well for Galena. James Tenbroeck swept his singles matches for Douglas, winning 6-2, 6-1, 6-0.

GALENA GIRLS TENNIS 12, DOUGLAS 6

Douglas High's Amelia Ritger stayed unbeaten in Northern Nevada in her high school singles career, but it wasn't enough for the Tigers. Ritger won both of her matches 6-3, 6-1.

For Galena, Hailey Llop won both of her singles matches 6-3, 6-1, Hannah Llop won her only match 6-0 and Natash Monga won her only match 6-0.

Also for Douglas in singles, Cesarina Cegalia won 6-0, 6-1. In doubles, Niki Hamzik and Marissa Delgadillo won 7-6 (10-8) over Ellen Ferguson and Alexandra Darling. Ferguson and Darling did pick up a 6-1 win.

Also for Galena, Adie Potter and Lindy Deller won both of their matches 6-2, 6-3, Emily McClintock and LeannRoggensack won 6-2, Annie Roach and Kelsey Rummler swept their three matches 6-2, 6-3, 6-0 and Courtney Morse and Cathryn hansen won their only match 6-1.

CHS FROSH FOOTBALL 31, MCQUEEN 18

Dylan Sawyers had a huge game, rushing for 300 yards, including 200 in the first half, and scored three touchdowns as Carson's freshmen got off to an impressive start.

Chance Quilling also completed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Handee. Sam Sorensen went 4-for-4 on extra points and kicked a 40-yard field goal. On defense, Logan Peternell had a fumble recovery.
