LAS VEGAS " Republican Rep. Jon Porter has launched the first negative television commercial of the race against Democratic state Sen. Dina Titus.

In an ad that began airing Wednesday, Porter describes Titus as "a self-serving politician Nevada can't trust." He criticizes the state senator for voting to increase her pension and raise taxes.

The votes are taken out of context, and cast as though they are linked. However, the pension increase dates back to 1989 and would not have automatically applied to Titus.

Titus, along with Republicans in the Legislature, approved the tax increases years later in 1991 and 2003.

Titus campaign spokesman Andrew Stoddard says the Porter is focusing "on things that happened nearly 15 to 20 years ago" rather than the congressman's record.
