Sierra Lutheran wins Reed small schools title
The Sierra Lutheran boy cross country team had another outstanding race, finishing third overal at the Reed Invitational on Friday, a meet that featured predominantly 4A and 3A school.
The Falcons also won the small schools title at the event. A highlight came for the Douglas County school when it was able to beat Manogue by two points after Manogue had beaten Sierra Lutheran by one point the week before at the North Tahoe meet. schools.
The Reed Invitational is a 3.1-mile course that winds around Reed High and the track, grass, dirt, trails and the infamous Reed hill that comes up after about two miles of the race.
Galena's Bryan Tibaduiza broke the course record by 11 seconds, winning in 16 minutes, 10 seconds. Sierra Lutheran's Wade Meddles was able to stay with Tibaduiza and even led him on occasion during the first part of the race but then Tidaduiza pulled away just before the Reed Hill.
Wade finished in 16:47, coming in second out of 101 runners. Sierra Lutheran's Michael Kubel finished 12th, finishing in 18:24, which was a minute faster than his time last year. Also for Sierral Lutheran, Levi Grabow (19:03) was 23rd and Andrew Deterding (19:16) was 25th as each knocked off almost three minutes off their times from last year. Nathanael Williams (19:38) was 32nd, Preston Lyons (19:52) was 38th and Ryan Jackson (22:58) was 71st as he also took three minutes off his time from last year.
Becky Grabow and Tori Jackson, the two girls who make up the Sierra Lutheran High School girls cross country team both had solid races. Jackson dropped more than two minutes off her previous time for a 4,000 meter race, turning in a 19:59 to place 36 in a field of 81. Grabow just missed out by five seconds on medaling coming in 11th with a time of 18:09, also a personal best by more than a minute.
Sierra Lutheran's junior varsity boys team came in fourth overall with Nathan Conover leading the team, coming in 18th on the 2.4 mile course with a time of 15:20, immediately followed by John McRae (15:21) in 20th, Bob DePaoli (15:30) in 21st, Nick DePaoli (15:41) in 24th, Conner Love (16:25) in 40th, Anthony Brewer (16:29) in 41st. and Ben Martin (19:54) in 73rd.
Tiny Mite Blues football falls to Sparks Cardinals
The Carson Senators Tiny Mites Blue football team lost a hard fought battle to the Sparks Cardinals on Friday night, falling 30-12 at the Golden Eagle Sports Complex in Sparks.
Colton Schafer scored on the Senators first drive behind the blocking of linemen Dean Poppenga, Connor McCleary, Kevin Tooke, Cody Neal, Gabriel Tatro and Paul Honein. The Cardinals speedy running backs were able to run the ball outside the tackles and scored five touchdowns over the course of the contest.
The Senators defense comprised of Sasha Keith-Handschuh, Malek Kangas, Braxton Carter, Brandon Mendoza, Peter Honein, Garrett Tibma and Garrett Wilson were able to hold the Cardinals to two scores in the first half as Sparks took a 12-6 halftime lead.
Senators quarterbacks Jacob Sorber and Chance Sanders did a solid job of distributing the ball under fierce defensive pressure, and running back Adam Fenton was successful running the ball up the middle for 4 and 5-yard gains throughout the night. Schafer scored once again in the second half for the Senators.
The Tiny Mites Blue will travel to Reno's Mira Loma Park this Friday for a 6 p.m. game against the Reno Patriots Blue squad.
Tiny Mite Silver turns in solid effort vs. Patriots
The Carson Tiny Mite Silver youth football team played another solid game Friday night against the Reno Patriots Red at Mira Loma Park. The silver offense was led by tailbacks Camdyn Meikrantz and Dillon Skaggs, quarterback Blake Menzel, wingbacks Thomas Kreider and Jacob Nichols. The offensive line of Blake Ewing, Christopher Jones, Jonathan Bates, Kristian Jachimiak, Justin Kattenhorn, Dylan Taylor and Devin Presley had their hands full with the hard charging Patriot defense.
The Silver defense found themselves on the field nearly the entire second half but only gave up one touchdown. Skaggs, Menzel, Meikrantz, Alexander Robison, and A.C. Garcia helped lead the defense. Jachimiak had several key tackles. Nichols had a tackle for a 10-yard loss.
The Senators next game is at at Governor's Field at 6 p.m. this Friday against the Sparks Wolf Pack.
Douglas volleyball takes second in tournament
The Douglas High volleyball team won six matches all by two straight games before losing in the championship match at the Sheldon High Tournament held on Saturday in Elk Grove, Calif.
Douglas was seeded third out of 24 teams. It was a marathon event as the first match began at 8:30 a.m. and the last match didn't end until after 8:30 p.m.
On its way to the championship, Douglas beat No. 1 seed Colfax, Calif., 25-19, 25-20. In the championship, Douglas fell to Del Oro, Calif., 25-27, 13-25.
