It was a night I will never forget. Some of my friends decided to surprise me and my wife with a combination roast and recognition dinner at our Governor's Mansion, and what a night it was. We also raised a few dollars for a scholarship. That will be announced later.
Twenty years as executive director of FISH was a rewarding opportunity to do the kind of things many people only dream of, but the beautiful mansion social hall filled with people who have been a part of those 20 years put the topping on an already fulfilling life of service.
Members of my own family flew from sister states. Both of my sons were there. Employees and Board Members from 20 years back gave me hugs, verbally and personally. Associates from sister agencies were there. Volunteers and staffers at FISH and its various departments were there. Service club associates were there. Both candidates for mayor were there as were several other public office holders and candidates. The First Lady honored me. Many of the local clergy from several denominations were there. Every person in the crowd must be thanked again.
I don't know how to express the overwhelming wave after wave of surprise and appreciation that I felt through the entire event.
The only thing I can think of is there has to be someone in Carson City today who is thinking of a life calling. Not a job ... a calling. If that person decides to help others, then a few years from now, we will be having another meeting like the one given me. This capital city is a place where lives can be invested, where a community can be made even more like the loving and caring community that has supported me.
Come to think of it, there were several people at the event who ought to honored next year. We can always use a little more scholarship help.
Thank you.
