Seniors will be able to ride Carson City's bus system for free starting in October under a new program by the city.
People 60 years old or older can sign up starting Tuesday for a bus pass allowing them to ride free on Jump Around Carson (JAC). Funding for the program came from a state grant, according to Keith Pearson, city transit coordinator.
Seniors can sign up for the program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center, 901 Beverly Drive, until Oct. 3 and during normal business hours after then.

Rides for seniors used to cost 50 cents for seniors, who make up about a third of bus riders. Last year, seniors took 25,000 rides in Carson City.
The bus pass is good for fixed routes only. People must show the pass to ride free.
