The Carson High boys and girls cross country teams received the chance to take to their favorite course on Wednesday and took full advantage of the opportunity.
Carson hosted a five-way meet with Douglas, Wooster, Elko and McQueen at Washoe Lake State Park, a challenging 3.1-mile course in which runners receive a chance to run on the beach and through the water. Within the meet, the Senators held league events with Douglas and Wooster. The Senator girls beat Douglas 33-44 and Wooster 17-41 while Carson's boys defeated Wooster 16-47 and Douglas 16-41.
"Both teams had a real good day," Carson coach Pete Sinnott said. "We've had two good solid weeks of practice. The taems have shown a lot of improvement."
Both the overall winners among the five schools in the boys and girls races were determined by two seconds. In the girls race, Douglas High's Taylor Biaggi was able to hold off Carson's Yvonne Hollett as Biaggi won in 23 minutes, 37 seconds while Hollett took second in 23:39.
Hollett and teammates Amanda Gordon adn Jenny Mital all ran close together for a 2-3-4 finish. Gordon was third in 23:44 and Mital was fourth in 23:53. Also for Carson, Erica Sosa was seventh in 25:07, Laura Sosa was 14th in 26:20, Haley Ward finished in 27:12 and Chelsea Gordon finished in 29:09.
In the boys race, Elko's Eric Sandell edged Carson's Richard Shroy for first overall as Sandell finished in 19:26 and Shroy was second in 19:28. Also for Carson, Nick Schlager was third (19:59), Logan Philippi was sixth (20:36), Brenth Moyle was seventh (20:42), Brandon Bournacorsi was 11th (20:58), David McMasters was 16th (21:48), Evan Richards was 21st (22:22) and Josh Van Sickle finished in 22:25. Carson was also without one of its top runners in Zach Mapes, who was out with a strained muscle.
Sinnott said the meets held at Washoe Lake State Park could not happen without the help of the Park's staff.
