Get ready for Candy Dance in Genoa

The Town of Genoa presents the 88th Annual Candy Dance Arts and Crafts Faire on Saturday and Sunday. The fair is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and features 300 artisans and crafters, 33 food vendors, family-friendly activities such as face painting, candle-making, crafts for children, and 4,000 pounds of Genoa's famous homemade candy.

Genoa merchandise and candy will be available in front of the Genoa Country Store at the intersection of Main Street and Genoa Lane. Admission to the fair is free, parking in designated parking lots is $5 per vehicle.

Road closures, parking and transportation

On Saturday and Sunday, roads leading into Genoa will be closed to traffic between 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Foothill Road south of Genoa, Genoa Lane east of Genoa and Jacks Valley Road at the Genoa Cemetery.

Designated Candy Dance parking lots will be near road closure locations. Parking is $5 per vehicle.

Free shuttles to and from Genoa will be provided at these parking lots. Shuttle service begins at 8 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m.

Free parking available at the Carson Valley Inn and Douglas High School, with round-trip airport mini-bus shuttles for $2 per person between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day.

Candy Dance Dinner Dance

The Candy Dance Dinner Dance is at the Orchard House on Saturday. The doors and no-host bar open at 4 p.m. with dinner served at 5 p.m. The dinner is catered by Mom & Pop's Catering of Carson City. The menu includes barbecued tri-tip, barbecued or honey-glazed chicken, coleslaw, potatoes au gratin, rolls and dessert. Wine, beer and soft drinks will be available for purchase..

Dance-only tickets are $15 and will be sold in advance and at the door. All tickets are non-refundable.

Tickets are available by mail by contacting the Genoa Town Office, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 782-8696.

Dealer's Choice Band

The Dealer's Choice band will perform live dance music at the 2008 Candy Dance Dinner Dance, 4-10 p.m. Saturday, at the Orchard House, on the corner of Carson and Main streets in Genoa.

Originally from Gardnerville, Dealer's Choice has performed at Topaz Lodge, Dini's Lucky Club in Yerington, MJ's Sports Bar in Carson City and Buckaroo's in Gardnerville. Dealer's Choice specializes in dance music, playing country songs, along with classic rock and pop.

Michael Wilde on rhythm and lead guitar and vocals has more than two decades of musical experience from performing in Canada, Alaska and many other states.

Folk artist Pati Smith-Wilde on vocals and keyboard has performed in Northern Nevada since the early 1980s.

Kevin Hayes is on drums and vocals. A native of New York, Hayes graduated from Long Island University with a bachelor's degree in music. He has worked in clubs and casinos in Los Angeles and Las Vegas and has opened for the Neville Brothers at the 1992 New Orleans Mardi Gras and played with Star Search winner Jenny Jones.

Don Helwig is on bass guitar and vocals. Helwig has 20 years experience playing clubs in the San Francisco Bay area and the Pacific Northwest.

Masons serve breakfast

Douglas Masonic Lodge No. 12 will serve a pancake breakfast Saturday and Sunday at the Masonic Lodge on Main Street, Genoa. Tickets are $5 at the door. The menu includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice and coffee. Proceeds from the breakfast will be used to maintain the Masonic Lodge building.

Candy Dance buttons

Candy Dance buttons with the Pink House design may be purchased for $1 before the Candy Dance fair weekend at the Genoa Town Office, Genoa businesses and Carson Valley locations. The price is $2 for buttons sold at the Candy Dance fair.

Costco will sponsor a Wear your Candy Dance Button or Go to Jail! fundraiser to benefit the Douglas Masonic Lodge No. 12.

Wyatt Earp (Genoa resident, Mike Curcio) and his deputies will "arrest" Candy Dance visitors who are not wearing Candy Dance buttons and put them in "jail," which will be located in the middle of town.

The bail to get out of jail is purchasing a Candy Dance button for $2.
