It would have been easy for Carson High's soccer team to overlook Fallon with a game against arch-rival Douglas on Saturday.
That didn't happen.
The Senators scored on six of their first 14 shots en route to an easy 9-0 Sierra League boys soccer win Wednesday night in a Sierra League boys match.
The win upped Carson's record to 3-1-1 in league play.
Ian Gunn scored a true hat trick (three straight goals), while Blake Moreland added two goals with Jaime Lopez, Christian Armas, Israel Lopez and Adam Updegrove adding one apiece.
"I didn't think we would (overlook Fallon)," Carson coach Nate Brigham said. "We came out to prove a point. Two games we've faltered a little and then we've come back strong. We put up a lot of goals and they were all well-worked goals.
"If we do the basics right, the results will go our way. When we play a team and we know it's going to be a good game, we think we need to do something fancy and we get away from what we should be doing."
Brigham was referring to the 1-1 tie with Wooster and Saturday's 2-0 loss to Galena where the Senators' effort was less-than stellar.
Brigham knows that his team must play like it did against Fallon and not like it did against Galena or Wooster to be able to knock off Douglas. The game will be played on Carson's field-turf football field.
"I know they (Douglas) lost a lot of seniors," Brigham said. "They are putting up good numbers. Records go out the window when it's Carson and Douglas. One team could be in first and one could be in last and it's going to be a good game. That's the way rivalries are."
Brigham is preparing his team for a physical game, which is the way Douglas has played in the past.
"We have to be more aggressive in the center of the field," Brigham said.
Carson was aggressive offensively against Fallon, constantly putting pressure with through balls and centering passes.
Carson got on the scoreboard in the first minute when John Nuthall sent a through ball upfield to Israel Lopez, who scored easily.
The Senators made it 2-0 in the 7th minute when Moreland took a pass from Brady Roser and fired a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced into the goal.
The Senators kept up the pressure, and Updegrove scored in the 12th minute for a 3-0 lead.
Moreland made it 4-0 in the 14th minute after being pulled down in the penalty box. Fallon goalie Adan Gonzalez knocked down Moreland's initial shot, but the Carson star hammered home the rebound.
After Christian Armas scored in the 18th minute to make it 5-0, Gunn concluded the first half with a goal in the 32nd minute, scoring the first of his three goals.
The pace was much slower in the second half, as Brigham liberally subbed against the short-handed Greenwave.
Gunn scored in the 43rd minute, taking a pass from Cyrill Suto and heading it in for a 7-0 lead. Nine minutes later he took a pass from Moreland and scored to make it 8-0.
Jaime Lopez, who was called up from JV to replace Uriel Duran, scored in the 68th minute for the 9-0 margin.
Duran said he expects to return in two weeks. He said his ankle is badly sprained and not fractured. That is god news for the Senators.
"We got caught," Fallon coach Brian Sutherland said. "I don't even know what to say. It was definitely not one of our better games. We play them again and hopefully we'll play better. My kids kept at it and played the whole game; never quit. That is very positive."
JV: CARSON 7, FALLON 0
The Senators, thanks to two goals and two assists by Luis Camacho and two goals plus an assist by Louis Gonzalez rolled to an easy win.
Jason Martinez and Pedro Chavez also scored. Fallon also had an own goal.
Guillermo Alonso, Sam Hutchison, Javier Barrios, Gustavo Gonzalez and Skyler Greenman played great defense making it an easy night for Chavez and David Yanez, who shared time in goal.
Carson is now 5-0 in league.
