Several agencies are sponsoring a bicycle rodeo to bring awareness and safety to young and adult riders alike.

The Carson City Kids Bike Rodeo will be 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at Mills Park. Offered for the second year, information learned could save a person from injury.

"We want to encourage kids and adults to bike rather than take a car," said Donna Inversin, secretary and walk leader for Muscle Powered, and is also a member of We Can.

"Our goal at We Can is to fight obesity, so we encourage children to get out and be active."

The bike rodeo will offer goodie bags for kids with information about bicycle safety, raffle for kids and adults, with the rodeo designed for children in grades kindergarten through fifth who already know how to ride a bike. Trained bicycle safety educators will offer the bike safety rodeo.

All participants must bring a bicycle and bicycle helmet, must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Helmets and bikes will be checked for safety. A course in "holding the line," safety stops, looking over the left shoulder, panic stops and a slalom course will be offered.

"We will also offer a prize to the school that has the highest attendance (of participants)," added Inversin. "All the principals know of this. We will give cash for sports or safety equipment."

Information in bicycle safety can be found at www.bicyclenevada.com.

"I don't ride a bike, but I do encourage others," Inversin said. "I love to walk and have hiked all my life."

A limited number of bicycles and helmets will be available for those without.
