Eye opener for WNC softball vs. Nevada

Western Nevada got a dose of what big-time college softball was on Saturday in a scrimmage against the University of Nevada in Reno.

"It was an eye-opener playing Nevada," WNC coach Dick Allen said. In the Wolf Pack, the Wildcats played a team that advanced to last year's NCAA Tournament where it played on even terms with eventually College World Series participant UCLA. "You can see why they're a top 25 team."

As if that wasn't enough, WNC also scrimmaged Shasta Community College, which advanced to the California State Final Four last year. Again as it was at times last week, WNC was plagued by poor defense and Nevada took full advantage.

While no official score was taken, Allen said while his team struggled against Nevada, the game was close against Shasta. But the Wildcats also failed to score on the two games. "We didn't hit the ball very well," Allen said.

Amber Huish continued her strong play as she had three hits on the day and Kelsie Farr had two hits to account for most of WNC's hits.

Allen said Annalee Rubio struggled with the command of her changeup on the mound, but added he thought Alyson Herman pitched well. But he stressed that his team needs to play solid defense behind its pitchers.

"You can't give them more than three outs and not have it going to come back and haunt you," Allen said.

"It's a good learning experience," Allen also said about the tough competition. "It helps you know what you've got to work on. It's a work in progress."

And WNC will be back at it again today when it scrimmages Nevada again in a doubleheader, beginning at 10 a.m. in Reno.

"I'm not discouraged," Allen said. "We're going to keep plugging away. Hopefully we'll be better tomorrow."
