Time to get your taxes in order, since the April 15th date is arriving soon.
With that reminder, Vern Manke sent us the following Internet gem: "... however, it's been said that due to a recent change for the next four years, taxes will not be due until you are nominated to a cabinet position." (See ... we can alienate Democrats as well as we do the Republicans. This is an equal alienation column.)
Carolyn noticed a very animated sign twirler at the north end of town this week ... and, while the twirler was really good, he spun the sign so fast, she couldn't read it. Maybe a few moments rest, interspersed by twirling, would be in order. Don't do much good, if you cain't read the sign.
Birthday's and good news abound: Happy Birthday's to Sherry Hester, Rory Hogan, Marty Lequerica, Mary Efford Jones and Tracy Larkin (who just hit "the Big One"). Andie Anderson's BAC Stage Kid's "Annie" was a sold out deal ... great for everyone. It was also nice to hear that Marilyn and Bud Smith enjoy our column; and good to see Mary and Susie Efford at Creekside the other day. The WNC "Wildcats" took their first four home games. Wow.
We hope the Nevada Legislature does NOT repeal the motorcycle helmet law...unless, when you get a vehicle license, you give proof of medical insurance. M saw too many motorcycle accidents while working in ER and x-ray, who were UNINSURED medically...and guess who had to pick up the tab for their "freedom of choice"? Then again, maybe that should hold true for ALL vehicles.
"Art at Adele's" was a lovely evening. "Kids in Transition" benefited, as did the people who were there ... marvelous wine, hors d'oeuvres (absolutely yummy stuffed grape leaves and lamb kefta kebabs ... those and a couple of others, were all M could shanghai at the time), fine art, great music and friendly people. Pam Graber, Jim Smolenski, Mosey Covington, Todd Westergard, Ann and Joe McCarthy, Ralph Marrone, Peggy and Carter Twedt, Maggie Tracey and Brendan Riley, Jerry Massad, Terry Ward and Andy McKenzie, were just a few of those who enjoyed the festivities. Congratulations to Karen and Charlie Abowd and their staff for a wonderful time (and Karen's painting were grrrrrreat!).
"Notes to the dog and cat" (posted on the bottom half of the refrigerator) were gleaned from the Internet: "The proper order for kissing is: Kiss me first, THEN go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough." "For the last tim e... there is no secret door from the bathroom. You can claw, meow, whine, try to turn the knob or put your paw under the door ... I will still exit by the door I came in through. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years, and your attendance is not required."
The Miss Carson City /Miss Douglas County pageant crowned Angelina Liguori and Mackenzie Cauley respectively ... they will do a bang up job. All the girls were talented and did their best, and all looked smashing in their bathing suits and gowns. Any one of them could have been the winner. And "somebody's" granddaughter became Miss Congeniality...Maggie Jesse...yippee. Now all she has to do is take karate and learn to kick butt (shades of the movie).
Our congratulations to the volunteers in the Fargo, N.D. flood debacle. Say a prayer for them that the water keeps going down and their emergency levees hold.
"Strings in the Schools Youth Orchestra" will perform tonight at 7 p.m. in the Plaza Conference Center (450-5584). The program is free. And Deana Hoover's writing class begins April 15 at 5:30 p.m. at Comma Coffee (883-5789). $100 for eight classes.
Father Jerry Hanley is recuperating from gall bladder surgery at the Cordisco's and he wants to thank everyone who's been helping out (particularly "St. Jennie," and praying for him.
Have a glorious Palm Sunday (and start dying your eggs).
