Carson High's softball team rode the strong right arm of Cassie Vondrak and the hitting of Kristin Withrow en route o a doubleheader sweep of Wooster Saturday afternoon in Carson City.
Vondrak pitched a two-hitter to lead Carson to a 6-1 win in the first game, and then combined with Lindsey Ashbaugh on a two-hitter in the second game, a 13-1 five-inning win.
Withrow went 2-for-4 in the opener and went 4-for-4 in the second game.
"We played good ball today," said Carson coach Scott Vickrey, who watched his team improve to 7-2 in Sierra League play. "Cassie did her job in the circle. We got hits throughout the lineup which is nice."
After leaving the bases juiced in the first inning of the first game, Carson tagged Wooster's Andrea Brown for three runs and three hits in the second.
With one out, Krista Mattice walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Withrow's double. Belen Munoz followed with a single to score Withrow. Leid followed with a single and Munoz scored when the ball got through the left fielder.
After Wooster scored an unearned run in the third, Carson made it 5-1 on a hit batter, a double by Hannah Shaw and a two-run single by Krista Mattice.
Armed with a four-run lead, Vondrak retired 12 of the last 14 she faced. Vondrak fanned 11 and didn't walk a batter.
Carson finished the scoring in the sixth when Munoz tripled and scored on a one-out error.
Vondrak used a great change-up to continually fool Wooster hitters.
"I used to throw a horseshoe (change-up)," Vondrak said. "I changed my grip to like a knuckleball and just let it come out. My defense was really good behind me."
Vondrak worked the first four innings of the second game. Ashbaugh worked the final inning. The duo combined for five strikeouts and a two-hitter.
Withrow doubled and scored on an error in the first. Withrow singled home a run in the third.
Carson put the game away with eight in the fourth. Withrow had two hits in that inning.
Mariah Hartley went 2-for-2 to complement Withrow. Megan Hein also had two hits for the Senators.
