BALTIMORE (AP) " CC Sabathia and the new-look New York Yankees absorbed an old-fashioned beating on opening day.

Sabathia allowed six runs and failed to get through the fifth inning in his first start with New York, and the Yankees lost to the Baltimore Orioles 10-5 on Monday.

After missing a postseason for the first time since 1993, New York spent $423.5 million on free agents Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Mark Teixeira during the offseason. Sabathia got a $161 million, seven-year deal, but the left-hander hardly looked like an ace against the Orioles, who finished last in the AL East in 2008 " their 11th straight losing season.

Sabathia (0-1) gave up eight hits in 4 1-3 innings, walked five, threw two wild pitches and did not record a strikeout for the first time since July 25, 2005, at Oakland. The six runs were the most he allowed in 32 starts since last April, when he pitched for Cleveland.

Missing injured Alex Rodriguez, the Yankees used home runs by Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui to close to 6-5 in the seventh, but a two-run homer by light-hitting Cesar Izturis sparked a four-run eighth that blunted the comeback.

Adam Jones and Brian Roberts each had three of Baltimore's 14 hits, and Jeremy Guthrie (1-0) gave up three runs and seven hits in six innings.

Mariners 6, Twins 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) " Ken Griffey Jr. got off to a great second start with Seattle, hitting an opening-night home run to back Felix Hernandez.

Hernandez (1-0) pitched eight innings and Franklin Gutierrez had a two-run homer against Francisco Liriano (0-1) as the Mariners " with five new faces in their lineup " took the first step toward forgetting the futility of last year. Manager Don Wakamatsu, baseball's first Asian-American in that job, enjoyed a winning debut.

Seattle spoiled the final of 28 openers in the Metrodome's history. The Twins move to open-air Target Field next spring.

Griffey opened his career with 11 brilliant seasons in Seattle before he was traded to his hometown Cincinnati Reds in 2000. He returned to the Mariners in February for a one-year, $2 million deal.

Griffey's 41 homers against Minnesota are his most against any opponent. His eighth opening-day home run matched a major league record and gave him 612 for his career.

Rangers 9, Indians 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) " Hank Blalock hit a three-run homer off Cliff Lee and Kevin Millwood pitched seven sharp innings to lead Texas to the win.

The Rangers had 15 hits against four pitchers, including Jarrod Saltalamacchia's solo homer in the eighth. It matched the most hits for Texas in a season opener.

The Rangers jumped ahead with four runs in the second off Lee, who allowed only four earned runs in his first seven starts a year ago.

Millwood (1-0) allowed one run and five hits in his fourth consecutive opening-day start for Texas.

Lee (0-1), the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, gave up seven runs and 10 hits in five innings.

Blue Jays 12, Tigers 5

TORONTO (AP) " Adam Lind homered and drove in six runs, Roy Halladay coasted with a big lead and Toronto beat Detroit in an opener delayed when fans littered the field.

Umpires waved both teams off the field for nine minutes in the bottom of the eighth inning after two balls were thrown from the stands in the direction of Tigers left fielder Josh Anderson.

Groundskeepers cleared paper airplanes and empty beer cups from the warning track as the public address announcer read a message warning the crowd of 48,027 that the game could be forfeited.

Lind had four hits and set a team record for RBIs in an opener. The Blue Jays roughed up Justin Verlander (0-1), who matched a career worst by allowing eight earned runs in only 3 2-3 innings.

Making his team-record seventh consecutive opening-day start, Halladay (1-0) pitched seven innings. He improved to 12-2 in 16 career games against the Tigers.
